About this deal

Geléhallon (raspberry drops) are soft, sugar-covered, raspberry-shaped gummies. They’re super-sweet but also have a nice little tang thanks to the raspberry flavoring. The sugar coating gives them a bit of texture as you bite in. Seriously though, it’s the thrill of making something for a purpose that I enjoy most, like birthday cakes. Anyway, here’s my competition entry: a chocolate salami, full with Polly goodies. Don’t worry, there’s no meat involved, this is pure chocolate goodness and it’s dee-vine!

Ah, the actual Swedish fish that Swedes eat: Lakridsfiskar. These fish-shaped liquorice bites come in a number of iterations, from sweet liquorice to salty liquorice, and even sour lemon (they’re yellow). Pour mixture out onto a long piece of cling-film so you have a long, rough "sausage" shape. Roll up the cling-film and gently squeeze, roll and push until your "salami" is smooth and round. Twist the ends of the cling-film tightly. Put in the fridge for another hour.

I’ve seen fancy ones done up with string, but the instructions for how to tie the string were harder to understand than the theory of relativity, so I left it out. Of course not. Swedes can eat candy on any day they like! The culture of Lördagsgodis (Saturday sweets) is very real, however, and it’s true that most Swedes, particularly kids, focus their candy consumption on this one weekly event. Swedes love their Polly! Chocolate covered soft marshmallow sweets with flavours of arrak, buttertoffee and vanilla. NOTES:• If Polly sweets are not available, use anything you like. Shortbread, digestives or Rich Tea biscuits work really well, as do nuts, so just replace the amounts I've used with something else. I really don’t care about the prize (although it is a beautiful Bosch kitchen machine which would look dang pretty sitting in my kitchen), it’s the winning that counts. We all enter comps to win. Don’t we?

Colaflaskor are cola-flavored, chewy gummies. They aren’t unique to Sweden, but they are certainly a popular choice in the candy aisle! Pim Pim are another popular and ubiquitous candy made by Malaco, also known as Hallonbåtar. They are half-circle shaped, and meant to be sailboats. The candies raspberry-flavored and have a chewy but not soft texture. They are quite fruity and flavorful! The sweet and creamy milk chocolate perfectly complements the chewy center, creating a harmonious balance of flavors. Whether you're savoring them on your own or sharing them with friends and family, Cloetta Polly Original candies are sure to bring smiles to everyone's faces. In the 1940s, the Swedish government conducted studies on the tooth-decaying effects of overeating sugar (studies that were unethical and conducted on asylum patients with mental illness, it should be noted). The government then urged people to cut down on sugar intake and to keep their candy consumption to one day per week. And so Lördagsgodis was born. Each Polly Original candy features a soft and chewy center surrounded by a smooth milk chocolate coating. The combination of textures creates a delightful sensation with every bite.

Stir in whatever it is you are using and then place the bowl in the fridge for around an hour so it sets a little. Here are all the best Swedish candies you need to try! Swedish Liquorice and Gummies Ahlgrens Bilar Original and Saltlakrits This time around, it’s a competition organised by one of Sweden’s most popular chocolate sweets – Polly.Similar to Rolo, Center is a small cylindrical chocolate with a soft caramel filling that comes in a roll. These were first introduced in Sweden in 1941 and have been hugely popular ever since. There is also a bar version.

Combine the egg, sugar and coffee and add to the melted chocolate mixture and regularly stirring, cook for around five minutes (just until the sugar melts). Remove from the heat and allow to cool for a while. Experience the delightful taste of Cloetta Polly Original, a beloved candy that will brighten up your day. A note: some of the candies included here are produced by Fazer, a Finnish company. As with the rest of the Nordic region, Fazer confectionary is extremely popular in Sweden and so leaving out their products wouldn’t give a clear picture of the Swedish candy landscape! Chocolate salami is a popular dessert in Italy and Portugal and so named because well, it looks a bit like a salami (from the outside and also when sliced). Sura Skumflaskor, also known as FizzyDizzy, are colas-shaped lollies that have a chewy, marshmallowy texture as well as sour sugar coating. They’re defintiely not as sour as Swedish surströmming, and don’t really have a cola flavor to them; it’s generally fruity and the sour tang is the dominant taste.

These classic sweets are a great choice for treat time. And with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, you can feel happy to enjoy these as a fun treat. We’re sorry to break the bad news: Swedes don’t actually eat those red Swedish fish. There is a fairly popular fish-shaped candy in Sweden, but they are a salty liquorice flavor. The red fish are popular around the world, just not in Sweden. They have too many other candies to focus on! Swedish candy, also known as Swedish godis (the Swedish word for candy), is something of a cultural touchstone in Sweden. Choosing candy at the end of the week, called Fredagsmys (“cozy Friday”) is a major moment for kids and adults alike.
