A fourth company was raised from those Marines wishing to remain in New South Wales under Captain George Johnston, who had been Governor Arthur Phillip's aide-de-camp. [3] NOTABLE AUSTRALIAN EVENTS". Johnston received extensive land grants in areas of modern Petersham, Bankstown and Cabramatta. Johnston's other grants included land which is now the suburb of Annandale, named for his property that was in turn named after the place of his birth. He and Esther Abrahams farmed and lived on Annandale with their children. [8]

Many of the regiment's officers became wealthy and powerful individuals from their corrupt practices while in control of the colony. These officers and their descendants went on to become prominent colonists, government officials and land-holders in Australia. [20] Examples are: William Bligh, Account of the Rebellion of the New South Wales Corps, Banks Society Publications, Malvern, Victoria, 2003. The young officer subsequently acted as a recruiting officer in the United Kingdom before serving aboard HMS Sultan in the East Indies in 1781, and suffering a severe wound in action against the French. [4] [5] Returned to garrison duty in Portsmouth, he volunteered to join the New South Wales Marine Corps, which would accompany the First Fleet to New South Wales. He sailed for Australia aboard the convict transport Lady Penrhyn in 1788. [4] [5] [6] New South Wales [ edit ] a b c d Neville, Richard (May 1991). The regiment was formed in England in June 1789 as a permanent unit to relieve the New South Wales Marine Corps, who had accompanied the First Fleet to Australia. [1] The regiment began arriving as guards on the Second Fleet in 1790. The regiment, led by Major Francis Grose, consisted of three companies numbering about 300 men. Although drafts were sent from Britain to reinforce the regiment throughout its time in Australia, full strength was never to exceed 500. [2] In the absence of a single medium of trade, rum imported from India became the de facto currency – a commodity whose importation and distribution had been monopolised by the New South Wales Corps since the departure of Governor Phillip in 1792.Some people will be surprised to learn that historically, 26 January is also significant as the date marking the only military overthrow of government authority in Australia. Collins refused to help, so Bligh remained in Hobart for another year, mostly aboard the Porpoise, before returning to Sydney in January 1810, by which time the new governor Lachlan Macquarie had arrived.

Johnston was born on 19 March 1764 at Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, the son of Captain George Johnston, aide-de-camp to Lord Percy, later the 2nd Duke of Northumberland. Percy obtained a commission for the 12-year-old Johnston as second lieutenant of marines on 6 March 1776. Johnston went to America with his regiment, and took part in the American Revolutionary War, serving in New York and Halifax during 1777 and 1778, after which he was promoted to first lieutenant. [1] During the campaign, his father was killed. [2] The Duke of Northumberland, who had held Johnston's father in high regard, became Johnston's guardian. [3] January 1808 was certainly not a happy day for William Bligh but was he responsible for chaos in the colony? Was he just doing his duty? Was it just another example of the spectre of the Bounty mutiny returning to haunt him? Captain William Cox: builder of the road across the Blue Mountains, important pastoralist in the Hawkesbury and Bathurst regions. The next day Bligh wrote to the six officers demanding they present themselves at Government House to face charges of treason.
