About this deal

Scapa Bottler Distillery Bottling Bottling serie The Orcadian Bottled 08.2016 Casktype American Oak Casks Casknumber Batch GL01 Strength 40.0 % Vol. Size 700 ml 700 ml Barcode 5000299607176 Added on 07 sep 2016 9:52 pm by RoyC Scapa Glansa tries to be different with a peated profile which comes from a re-used barrel rather than from peated barley. For myself this is a very disappointing dram. My feeling as I sipped the whisky was that the producers knew that the spirit was not developed fully and decided to finish the whisky in ex-peated whisky barrels to cover over the weak spots. It really doesn’t work as the peat drawn from the barrel is more of a mild smoke that blurs but does not hide the undeveloped whisky. Scapa Glansa arrives in a nice display box (not shown) which piques the interest of the consumer. There is just enough information on the box to keep that interest growing, and inside the box the whisky is held in a medium tall bottle with attractive labeling. The bottles are closed with high density cork stoppers which give me that nice satisfying ‘pop’ when I open them. In the Glass 8/10 It’s needless to say these images are incredible and will make you book a holiday to Orkney immediately. The lemon zest also becomes more pronounced and is joined by some wonderfully smooth caramel, with subtle hints of oak wood.A much loved old discontinued expression from the other Orkney distillery, Scapa. Replaced briefly (and unsuccesfully) by a 14 year, an excellent 16 year followed before the distillery moved to NAS expressions. Nose: Runny honey and fresh cream. Hints of apple and a touch of anise. Maybe some crushed nuts, too... Cumbria may be better known for the Lake District than whisky but there’s now a distillery producing the good stuff.

September 2016 marked the launch of Scapa Glansa, the latest single malt whisky expression from the Orcadian distillery, Scapa. This is the first peated whisky from the Scapa range and brings a unique flavour that represents the diverse and unexpected contrasts of the island it is distilled upon. Nose: some wet cardboard up front, as well as gravel and wet plaster. Then some meadow flowers come out, with citrus fruits, green apples and dusty malt. Hints of pine needles with crushed walnuts. Light mint. Overall it stays pretty green. Both whiskies on the table today are NAS expressions (“ageless” they say). Yet they’re not particularly cheap. a b c d e f g h i Maclean, Charles (2016). Scapa Glansa Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

This is the fourth Single Malt Whisky which I tasted at the Beyond Islay tasting event hosted by Ryan Engen who is the Director of Spirits, for Liquor Stores N.A. Inc. at the Edmonton Wine and Beyond McTagggert Ridge location. At the tasting I enjoyed 7 different Single Malts in what was termed the Beyond Islay Single Malt Whisky Tasting. The Whiskies at the tasting were selected to represent the diversity of Scotland’s Island Whiskies reaching beyond the popular Islay Whiskies to the malts produced on the lesser known Islands. Scapa Glansa continues our exploration of the Island of Orkney in the north of Scotland. Another really high quality Scapa that challenges similar aged Highland Parks for its complexity but without the peat smoke influence.Part of the Distillery Reserve Collection, this non chill-filtered 12 year old Scapa cask strength single malt Scotch whisky was distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2015 at 58.5% ABV.
