Throughout her career, she won many awards and received many accolades, including a CBE for literature in 2017, and she won the inaugural BookTrust lifetime achievement award in 2015. Hughes passed away in February 2022. She has had such a huge impact on children's literature, picture books and illustration, which has reached many generations. Many famous authors, including Michael Morpurgo, Julia Donaldson and Philip Pullman, paid tribute to her after her death. She also collaborated with her daughter, Clara Vulliamy, on the Dixie O'Day series; which saw Shirley with an illustrator for the first time with Shirley writing the text and Clara creating the illustrations.
