About this deal

This wordless picturebook has a powerful (and quite depressing) message, as summarized in the author's note at the end of the book: "We are changing the face of our world at an alarming and an increasing pace." Windows took nearly three years to complete. Did she expect such a simple concept to take that long? Write a few sentences that describe each scene. Use these as narration when showing the pictures to an audience. Jeannie Baker is a multi-award-winning author and illustrator of a number of children’s picture books, including Window,Belonging and Where the Forest meets the Sea. Her unique and distinctive style is instantly recognisable and she is well known for her use of mixed media to create detailed and elaborate collages. The Australian environment has had an enormous impact on her work, and since Where the Forest Meets the Seaall her projects have had an environmental focus. She says herself that she works very slowly with projects often taking three or four years to complete but they are also designed as travelling exhibitions of artwork, and several projects have also been short animated films which she has directed. About the book I used this picture book during my sequence of English lessons on 'Rainforests'. I focused on this book during my starter activity in which I gave each table a different picture from the book.

The Think Aloud strategy is used to encourage students to voice their internal thoughts as they read. Reading short units of text cumulatively readers consider what individual words mean and how meanings shift and are firmed up as more information is provided. Students connect reading with their prior knowledge and complex thought processes are made visible. Good teachers model thinking aloud, speculation and problem solving as part of their everyday teaching. The next step is to explicitly show students how they can use this strategy to monitor their own comprehension.A script is useful to prepare to ensure you focus on particular strategies. A think aloud using a wordless picture book will encourage readers to slow down and focus on details. Here is an example below for the second spread: What I will say Use stop-motion animation to show the changing landscape (as seen through a window) over a period of years. The work is quite two-dimensional but I play with the little real depth the work has and a strong illusion of perspective is created. Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year Award 1992 Young Australian’s Best Book Award Picture Books 1992 Kate Greenaway medal UK Shortlisted 1992 Notable Book in the Field of Social Science USA 1992 The materials and techniques I use vary from one project to another. I enjoy the continual challenges this medium gives me to invent techniques and explore and experiment with materials and their textures.

Kiddle encyclopedia articles are based on selected content and facts from Wikipedia, edited or rewritten for children.Given that Jeannie is projecting one very strong idea, which by implication urges sustainable growth, it is likely she will be accused of producing propaganda. Is Window propaganda? Look at the use of perspective in each image. How do we know that objects are close / further away?
