About this deal

In our review we wrote: "Samsung's top-of-the-line Neo QLED 8K TV offered far better audio performance than we were expecting, with dialogue coming through in a particularly clear and prominent fashion." Of course, if you want the most immersive, cinematic experience then you'll need a soundbar. But if you're looking for an all-in-one solution with fantastic 8K picture, this is the best choice for you. We're also looking for what kind of features you're getting in a set, such as connectivity options and gaming tech, including HDMI 2.1 support for new-gen consoles. We measure gaming input lag ourselves, so we have a fair and comparative measurement of this between TVs.

The LG C2 OLED comes with the company’s a9 Gen 5 AI Processor, which is capable of upmixing stereo audio into virtual 7.1.2-channel surround sound—something LG calls AI Sound Pro.The C3 is the latest in LG’s long-running and stonkingly popular C-series ofOLED TVs. That popularity is well-earned: LG’s C-series has been a near-perfect intersection of performance, features and price for years, and not just compared with otherLG OLEDs, but with TVs in general. We'll test the smart TV software, of course, to see how easy it is to use, and what kind of apps it supports. And we think design matters too – how well are the ports arranged, how premium do the materials look and feel, and does it fit together well.

The What Hi-Fi? team has more than 100 years experience of reviewing, testing and writing about consumer electronics. It's important to note, though, that almost no native 8K content is available. If you buy an 8K TV and want to show off its ridiculously high resolution, you'll have to do so using nature, scenery and space footage from YouTube. At this stage, no streaming services have even hinted at launching 8K content, and it seems unlikely that an 8K disc format will ever materialise. But you'll pay a very high premium for this, compared to Samsung's highest-end 4K TVs (such as the QN90C, further down this list), which are very nearly at the same level of brightness and contrast. Still, you also get top-tier gaming features, excellent built-in sound, and fantastic One Connect box, which moves all the connections to a tidy separate box, with one cable carrying power and visuals to the TV.

Extra features are a bonus, like the Philips OLED807's Ambilight technology. This isn't a must-have, but it does upgrade your watching experience considerably, so we were sure to highlight the added features that we believe you'll genuinely value. As you can probably tell from our list above, LG, Samsung, Sony and Philips tend to be the top-performing brands at the premium end, though all bring out a wide range of models each year. These days, it's all about HDMI, which is used to connect everything from set-top boxes to video streamers, Blu-ray players to games consoles. Thanks to ARC/eARC (Audio Return Channel / Enhanced Audio Return Channel), a single HDMI connection can even be used to output sound to an AV receiver or soundbar at the same time as it receives a video signal. You want an 80-inch TV: The 83-inch model uses a different screen type that's far less bright – we wouldn't recommend it. Get the 83-inch LG C3 instead, which has Dolby Vision. TCL has been pretty forthright in recent times about its belief that LED – especiallyMini LED– is the future of TV, rather thanOLED, and the C845K is the brand's latest attempt to put its money where its mouth is. Other useful connections include optical and stereo outputs, which can be used in lieu of HDMI ARC to connect legacy audio equipment. Headphone outputs are still fairly common, too, though Bluetooth is also supported by most TVs now and some models now feature the latter but not the former.

There's no one brand that does TVs better than the others, but there are definitely some TV makes that excel in certain areas more than their rivals. The Samsung S95C is not just beautiful in picture but also in design. A sleek, stylish frame and ultra-slim trim means the S95C looks fantastic, especially when hung on the wall thanks to its razor thin depth. It also comes with a separate box called the One Connect for connections so there's one cable running to the TV. So you can have 4K screens that are OLED (almost all of them are, apart from some pricey 8K OLED TVs), and you can have 4K screens that are QLED, mini-LED or other tech. How we test the best TVsSony's latest flagship TV, the A95K, is truly impressive. Sony's excellent Cognitive XR processor has joined forces with new Quantum Dot OLED screen technology to deliver arguably the most flat-out beautiful images we’ve seen from a consumer television. There are plenty of reasons why you might want a TV built specifically for one purpose. Maybe you'd like to find the best TV for sport or the best gaming TV. But if you want to simply find the best TV on the market right now—and don't mind paying for it—there are plenty of excellent displays to choose from. Panasonic owns the Technics audio brand (every DJ’s favourite), and it’s put that know-how to good use on this set. The built-in 360 Soundscape Pro sound system is tuned by Technics, providing Hi-Fi quality sound for all your films, games, TV shows and music content. Also onboard are upwards and side-firing speakers to direct the sound more towards the viewer for rich Dolby Atmos results. It goes really loud, too, and there’s a very satisfying overall tonal balance. The Panasonic’s woofers can be provoked into some slight but distracting distortion by exceptionally deep bass, but those moments are rare, and the LZ2000 remains a TV of unusual sonic talent. The Sony A95K sounds more direct and clear than the LZ2000, and the Philips OLED937 offers even better clarity, detail and dynamics, but neither one of those rivals is as open and atmospheric as this Panasonic. While TVs aren't known for their sound quality, the Panasonic LZ2000's 360° Soundscape Pro audio performance is on par with an upper mid-range Dolby Atmos soundbar. As we said in our review: "The soundstage is wide and high, and front articulation from the Technics-tuned LCR soundbar array is outstanding."
