About this deal

Joan Aiken is at her best with this collection of gentle fairytales and fantasy stories, beautifully illustrated by Kevin Hawkes. The pictures are like little jewels themselves, or tiny "raindrops" that reflect the people and events in the stories. An excellent, cosy, curl-up-in-your-favourite-quilt read. I started this book thinking I'd never read it before, but something about one of the stories rang a bell, so I must have done many years ago. Hopefully the events of these stories will be just as fanciful to the children as the settings. Most children will not have records of breaking and entering, and any incidences of petty pilfering or even vandalism will have occurred as part of their learning about property and ownership. Some appropriation of another’s toys or breakages in frustration or misuse are common and nothing to cause concern about future morality.

Note: My few words have not done justice to Joan Aiken’s beautiful story. If you can, please read the full version.) There was no milk to moisten his cereal, only a slap to the head for daring to ask. He grabbed his bag and disappeared before she used him as an ashtray, again. A bed for the night" is about The Weevils, a playing group, not too different from Brs. Grimm's Musicians of Bremen, except that they all are human, and the Baba Yaga takes a part in the plot. And "The elves in the shelves", where all the creatures in a little girl's books come out and play.

The central most objective developed through this comprehension sequence is around themes with use of language and deriving meaning from context close behind. However, thorough coverage of all relevant National Curriculum objectives has been planned for so that no opportunity is wasted. She was born in Rye, East Sussex, into a family of writers, including her father, Conrad Aiken (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his poetry), and her sister, Jane Aiken Hodge. She worked for the United Nations Information Office during the second world war, and then as an editor and freelance on Argosy magazine before she started writing full time, mainly children's books and thrillers. For her books she received the Guardian Award (1969) and the Edgar Allan Poe Award (1972). Other questions can also be asked, and children can be encouraged to ask questions of their own, for example: So that’s where I’m headed for my response to Charli’s challenge to In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story about a thief or a theft.Invite individuals to explain the thinking behind the decision. A lively discussion may ensue, particularly if there are mixed responses. It would be of interest to note which children maintain their position, which waiver and which change their opinion. A Necklace of Raindrops by Joan Aiken: 9780307558534

ENGLISH: Eight semi-fairy stories by Joan Aiken. Two of them are about cats: "The cat sat on the mat" (and while there granted wishes) and "The baker's cat" (who was made to grow by a dosis of yeast). ALECCIONADOR E IMAGINATIVO CUENTO ACERCA DE LOS VALORES DE LAS BUENAS PERSONAS y LAS CONSECUENCIAS DE LAS ACCIONES DE LAS MALAS. The morning started badly; nothing unusual in that. He’d been woken in the night by shouting, slamming doors, and screeching car tyres. Nothing unusual there either. We chose this book for a Literary Leaf as the short stories in this collection are whimsical yet moralistic and have such lovely examples of literary language interwoven with humour that they are, we feel, perfect for the age-group. And as each story is relatively short, this will help children who are less-confident in their reading to feel a sense of achievement as well as supporting comprehension- development and understanding of story- plot and structure. Because Joan Aiken is the sole author of the anthology, this affords us a great opportunity to compare pieces by the same author in terms of style, use of literary devices and themes. My "acid test" of a good children's book is: does it appeal to adults? If not, there's probably not much there at all. Witness the fact that many, many adults enjoy Beatrix Potter, Milne and other "children's books" all their lives long, while the "fad" books fade away to no one's regret. This is an enduring classic, and I actually think I got more out of it at fifty than at a younger age. That is not to say that it's "over the heads" of children, because it's not. Tres empleados de una estación de tren en pleno desierto y sin actividad alguna, deciden emprender alternativamente y con sus ahorros, un viaje más allá de lo que hasta ahora conocen...el último de ellos descubrirá la solución a sus deseos de vivir en plenitud. Envy and jealousy — feelings familiar to many children who may have taken, borrowed or used something that didn’t belong to them. They may have squabbled about ownership or use of an item or had someone take something of theirs. Learning a sense of ownership as well as sharing is important in early childhood.
