However the shape and volume of each voxel is changed by external forces from the environment and internal forces via behavior. The morphology of a robot is denoted by the 4 × 4 × 3 = 48-element vector \(\ell \), where each element is the resting length stored at that voxel (with possible values within 1.0 ± 0.75 cm). Like most animals, our robots are bilaterally symmetrical. We built this constraint into our robots because bilateral symmetry is known to help with forward locomotion 20.
