About this deal

doesn't like visiting the stinky lake, his annoying big brother or his mum; but most of all he hates to be called a horse! I thought this book was fabulousJ. My favourite scene was when they were on the ship because it was dramatic and intense. I thought the history in the book was a little bit true and it makes me want to know more about ancient Egypt. It makes me want to read more of Gary Northfield's books. An unusual choice, to put the funny animal into a historical setting, though this worked (but how do the animals all understand the Romans, and how can they talk and wield weapons...? Never mind).

The training for gladiators was pretty fun to watch, if it wasn't for those annoying human gladiators who really need to get their heads out of their butts. Gee, he already said he was sorry and that the didn't mean it the way he meant it. And yes, he humiliated you, but come on, that is how it works in gladiator stuff. I did like that the animals were so dedicated to the cause. And that Plinie was helping them out afterwards with some more training. Oh, and I didn't even think Plinie was that annoying in this one. *cheers* My favourite characters are Brutus and Julius because both are extremely funny. You will love them! Welcome to the world of Julius Zebra. He is a cranky teenage zebra heading for the waterhole with his mom and friends, just like all of us, when out the blue a lion comes and shouts for all to head for the hills due to an unknown threat. As it turns out the threat is a Roman battalion collecting animals to provide entertainment at gladiator bouts. From there to a cliff-hanging end of the book, Julius and his friends do their best to please Emperor Hadrian and survive run-ins with the gladiators. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to read this book which has taught me not to waste my opportunities. I really enjoy this book it was about a zebra who became a Pharoah to Roman. I think it is the exactly the same story as Julius Caesar but instead of having Julius Caesar we had a zebra be a crew of animals instead of a crew of people also known as humans. I am definitely going to keep an eye out for more of Gary’s books beause they are so funny and very child-friendly (in a good way!) I can’t wait to read more of his books!

I think it was really funny, especially when Brutus (should be a Debra) made the chariot tip over just to get a bunch of seaweed and when Julius the brown ball was poo! In other words, an amazing book. I would recommend this book to children the same age as me so that they can learn about Romans and become interested in them like me. Class 3H from Carr Junior School in York have read and reviewed Julius Zebra: Rumble with the Romans by Gary Northfield. The book is published by Walker Books. It tells the story of a zebra called Julius who is captured by Romans from his home in the heart of the Serengeti in Africa and taken to fight against gladiators in the famous Colosseum in ancient Rome. The story starts when Julius and his friends think that they are going on a jolly holiday to Britannia because Septimus and Emperor Hadrian think that Julius and his friends are not strong enough. Emperor Hadrian tells Julius Zebra that he will grant him freedom if he and his friends fight against the vicious and brave animals in Britannia. Julius and his friends fight against the animals. The first time they lose but the second time they fight against all the animals and they succeed. Because they beat all of the animals, the Celts love them and rebel under Julius’ leadership. The Celts win and Julius becomes head of Britannia.

The most exciting parts of the book were when the vicious animals beat Julius and his friends because in real life pigs, buffalos and sheep can’t beat a lion or a zebra. Imagine Gladiator, Ben Hur or Spartacus, where the hero is replaced by a rather nervous, slightly daft and totally naive zebra, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Rumble with the Romans. Add in a healthy dollop of toilet humour and a host of other equally bonkers animal characters and you have a book that will cause many a giggle and guffaw amongst the 7 pluses (and most likely their parents as well). He also illustrated the children's books Henry VIII Has To Choose and Sleeping Beauty: 100 Years Later, for Franklin Watts. This book made me want to find out more about history and this book made me want to get all of Gary Northfield's books. There was nothing in this story I didn't like. I thought the history in this book was so funny the way he put it. When I was half-way through the story I had a thought in my head and it was, 'Will Julius ever be alright without the Egyptians knowing who he really is?' It was mostly all fun (except the epilogue). All the characters were amusing, especially Brutus the one who wears a seaweed wig. While I have given this a top score, this is because it will have appeal to a KS2 readership, and is funny. I did think it could have been improved however. The first person might have worked better than a third person narrator, I expected to hear Julius talking to me directly. Julius is a zebra (not Debra, ZEBRA). Spoiled, kind a stupid and speaks-before-he-thinks but gets pretty pissed off when somebody mistakes him for a horse. 🦓🦓🦓😀🐴🐴🐴 I was laughing out loud every time when Julius was brutally honest (talk about zebras who speak before they think).😃😃😃

I think it’s really good and funny because it has lots of adjectives, good characters and lots of funny words. I would give it ten out of ten because it is so fun and amazing. I just love it! I just adored the expressions on the animals (and humans). They were so silly and over the top. Especially Julius had some fabulous expression ranging from demented to crazy to something that should pass as normal. I would recommend this book because it is adventurous especially when Julius goes on a boat from Rome to Britannia. I would recommend this book for people at school who are learning about the Romans because it would teach them more about Roman history and life. I learnt that in Britannia they also had arenas and in the arenas animals fought against animals. The book made me want to find out more about the Romans and Celts.

Gary Northfield Press Reviews

I would recommend this book because it is hilarious. I give it nine out of ten because it is a bit scary in parts. The funniest part so far is when Julius calls the gladiators, monkeys! (Katie P, 8) When they get there they meet a group of other animals: Felix, who is a nice but dim giraffe, Rufus, the simple antelope, Lucia, the ditsy, vegetarian crocodile and Pliny, the feisty, little mouse. We join Julius and his friends on their epic adventure. They are made to join a gladiator school run by Septimus, the angry gladiator teacher, who sets about training them to fight the deadliest battle of their lives! Kniha je plná skvelých ilustrácií. Veľmi sa mi páčili, dopĺňali príbeh a určite udržia pozornosť malých čitateľov.
