It does, to my eyes, still feature a little green tint in places but not as much as it did before. The audio performance disappoints, and this being LG’s flagship OLED, I’d have expected better. It's important to stress that G3's huge picture improvements pay off with game graphics at least as impactfully as they do with video. Gaming fans already loving the prowess of LG TVs as gaming displays will likely think they've died and gone to heaven when they see what their games look like on the G3. Having reviewed the OLED65C3, it’s the time of the OLED65G3, LG’s flagship 65-inch model in its 2023 line-up.

On the upside, the new virtual 9.1.2 mixing system and built-in Dolby Atmos decoding manage to create a sense of the soundstage not just spreading well beyond the edges of the TV (up as well as to left and right), but also actually wrapping around the sides of your seating position. Another innovative feature is the MultiView function, allowing users to watch two different sources simultaneously on the same screen, essentially dividing the screen into two separate viewing areas. This functionality is perfect for multitasking, such as watching a movie while keeping an eye on a live sports event, or playing a video game while monitoring a news broadcast. However, while displaying two separate HDMI feeds is supported, it has to be done by selecting the “Dual PC” option, which tops out at 4K 60Hz. While LG’s webOS interface remains our favourite among various TV brands when it comes to ease of use and intuitiveness, especially in combination with the aforementioned Magic Remote, the company’s decision to move towards a full-screen experience last year didn’t go down well with some viewers. As was the case with G2, the G3 is primarily designed for wall mounting, so doesn’t come with a tabletop stand. The G2 was referred to as LG’s “Gallery edition” OLED for this reason, but the brand is marketing the G3’s design as “Zero Gap” due to the way it fits flush against your wall. That 70% figure is compared to traditional OLED as used in the LG B3 – the screens LG was putting in flagship TVs about 3 years ago – so it’s not quite as drastic as it sounds. But given OLED’s notoriously limited brightness, any ground gained on this front is welcomed.

Unique to the G3 series in LG's range, MLA technology involves applying a huge number of tiny lenses just behind the screen that focus the light coming from the OLED pixels towards the viewer more directly, reducing the amount of light that gets lost on its journey through the OLED panel and out into your living room. Colours also appeared more vibrant when watching WCG (wide colour gamut) content thanks to a combination of the higher brightness and LG’s processing, although QD-OLED TVs still have the upper hand in outright colour luminance due to their RGB subpixel make-up as opposed to WRGB, which results in some colour dilution.

When it came to connecting devices, this was a smooth experience. The LG G3 comes with four HDMI 2.1 ports, which makes it a contender as one of the best gaming TVs too – and when these are connected this information is thoughtfully displayed on the screen’s menu. It also only shows which ports have something connected, which is a neat touch. As if the huge increase in brightness wasn’t already sensational enough, the OLED65G3 somehow manages to completely rewrite our interpretation of the OLED rule book by actually producing much richer, more vibrant and more natural colour tones than 2022's G2. Like its predecessors before it, the LG G3 OLED is the smart buy for cinephiles who want market-leading picture quality. The G3’s OLED panel uses the latest brightness-boosting technology for startlingly bright highlights and vivid color output, and it's tailor-made for a flush, wall-mounted position. The C-series and G-series differ in that the latter comes with a bigger boost in the picture and audio departments, as well as boasting the new Micro Lens Array panel developed by LG Display.

Motion judder with 24p film sources can sometimes look a touch hard-edged on the OLED65G3 without using any of the provided motion processing options - a result of the extra brightness making juddering edges look more pronounced. LG's Cinematic Movement processing option, though, now delivers an excellent way of reducing 24p judder without making the picture look forced or uncinematic.

However, while the improvements LG has brought to the OLED65G3's pictures are unequivocally outstanding, the same can't be said of its sound system. Connections are all built into the TV, rather than using an external connections box as might have been a nice option for a TV so focused on wall mounting. The connections are pleasingly numerous, though, including in four HDMI ports that all support the full 48Gbps bandwidth possible with the latest 2.1 standard - meaning they all support the latest console and PC gaming features. There is Freeview Play for UK users that includes the catch-up and on-demand apps. Paid/subscription apps are plentiful, with every big name supported in Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+, Prime Video, Sky Store, YouTube and Twitch; to Hulu, Max, Fubo TV, and more in the US.
