Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows for in vivo, noninvasive measurement of concentrations of certain chemicals, including N-acetylaspartate (NAA). N-acetylaspartate is the most dominant proton MRS peak and one of the most abundant amino acids in the brain, where it is predominantly localized in neurons and absent in mature glia. As such, NAA is considered a putative neuronal marker, which is decreased in conditions characterized by loss of neurons or axons, e.g., stroke, Alzheimer dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury and epilepsy. In addition, NAA synthesis is dependent on energy metabolism. Decreased levels of NAA have been used as an indirect marker of neuronal/axonal loss or compromised neuronal metabolism. 5 – 7

Lithium citrate– This is another popular form mainly used as a prescription medication for the treatment of bipolar disease. Lithium is not metabolized, and is eliminated through the kidneys within 48 hours. The expected lithium orotate half-life is around 24 hours. One study examining the effects of long-term low-dose lithium treatment found that it doesn’t impair kidney function. However, several other side effects were observed, such as a higher incidence of diabetes mellitus, increased body weight, increased neutrophils and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and occurrence of arrhythmias.

However, there are supplements containing lithium compounds on the market, e.g., Li orotate, the clinical efficacy of these preparations has not been investigated—only one study has shown a normotomy effect with the use of Li supplementation at a dose of 0.4 mg [ 17, 53]. Moreover, caution is advised in the use of food supplements; it is important that the consumer be fully acquainted with and follow the information provided by the manufacturer [ 17, 87]. The literature has already reported a case of mild intoxication manifested by severe nausea and vomiting as a result of an intentional overdose of a Li-containing food supplement by ingestion of 18 tablets with a total dose of 83 mg Li [ 88].

This is unsurprising, as we all ingest some level of naturally-occurring lithium from food and water. These trace levels may in fact benefit brain and mental health.
