About this deal

Mrs Lilian England keeps strange hours, doesn't interact much with the children and doesn't involve herself in the running of the household. Mr England is friendly, relaxed and approachable and it's soon clear who really runs the house. This is a slow moving gothic tale, with Ruby's past carefully revealed and the relationships between the characters slowly evolving. atmosfera. Aici cred că este cel mai mare plus al romanului. Setting-ul & vibe-ul sunt palpabile, introduc cititorul în lumea dinăuntrul copertelor. Descrierile sunt foarte vizuale. The death of Mr England ended before it had even started which was a real shame and being one of the main characters I would have expected plot twists and unlikely turns in the road, but again, nothing. Ruby May is unable to immigrate to the United States with her employers, so and in dire need of funds, she accepts a Nanny position, working for Charles and Lilian England. Charles is a wealthy mill owner, but only employs a small staff. But that is not the only odd thing Ruby notices about her new situation. I wonder if the setting of the novel in the year 1904 is significant, as the Suffragettes’ struggle to win the vote for women was becoming militant at this time. There is no overt politics in the book, but Halls appears to be putting forward a feminist case for the strength of women.

Mrs England is a tale of mental health, power and marriage, but it’s also a story of the deepest and darkest deception – of the deceit between a husband and wife, between adults and children, between a person’s heart and their mind. It’s made all the more compelling by its isolated Yorkshire setting, which cuts its characters off from the outside world and which Halls writes about so beautifully. She has the ability to draw readers into her story so completely that it’s a real effort to wrench yourself out of it when you invariably have to put the book down. If you’ve loved Stacey Halls’ previous books, you’re in for a real treat with this novel – the author’s most evocative, intriguing and compelling book so far.

For a holiday in Greece without leaving home, the Charmian Clift reissues couldn’t have come at a better time. Eclipsed in her lifetime by her writer husband George Johnston and forever after by her connection to Leonard Cohen (whose talent the couple fostered in the 1960s on Hydra), she makes the best travelling companion. In Mermaid Singing she describes her family’s first year in Greece, on the then impoverished sponge-fishing island of Kalymnos, and in Peel Me a Lotus she charts, with acid wit and moments of brilliant existential clarity, the infancy of a bohemian community before mass tourism changed the islands for ever.

Mrs England by Stacey Halls: Brimming with mystery, suspense Mrs England by Stacey Halls: Brimming with mystery, suspense

I had read Ms. Halls' book THE LOST ORPHAN/THE FOUNDLING and thoroughly enjoyed her writing style and story line. It’s a story of power and control but also the strength of women to survive and thrive in such a time.

Egyszerűen lenyűgöző. Vészjósló, csodálatosan megírt és kitűnő, hátborzongató Edward-kori történet.” – Daily Mail Mrs England is the third book from historical fiction writer Stacey Halls. I read and love both The Familiars and The Foundling, so this was an incredibly anticipated release for me. The story follows Nurse Ruby May a graduate of the Norland Institute. When she is forced to leave her position she knows she needs to find another as soon as possible. When the opportunity comes up to be a nurse to the four England children, Ruby takes the position immediately. When she arrives in Yorkshire she soon finds things aren’t right with the family. Mrs England is detached and mysterious, and the servants won’t talk to her. As Ruby spends more time with the family, she uncovers more than she could possibly imagine. Ruby May is a sympathetic character. She’s motivated and determined and her care of children is beyond reproach. Trained at the prestigious Norland school and recipient of her childcare certificate, Nurse May puts the child or children she is caring for at the center of her life. Norland College, which still exists today, provided Prince George and his siblings, Charlotte, and Louis, the children of Prince William and Kate with a Norland nanny. This is one of the most magical and atmospheric novels I have had the pleasure of reading in some time.Stacey Halls új regényének középpontjában ismét tragikus sorsú, ám hihetetlenül bátor nők állnak, és az anyaság, a gyermekek nevelése ezúttal is kifejezetten nagy hangsúlyt kap. A Mrs. England főszereplője a naiv May dadus, míg a nála rafináltabb, jóval összetettebb címadó szereplő sorsába jóval kevesebb betekintést nyerhetünk. Az olvasmányos történet baljós hangulatot áraszt, és lassan csordogál, egészen addig, míg mindkét nő lelki terheire fény nem derül. Intimacies by Katie Kitamura (to be published in the UK in July) is beautifully written, deep and soulful, and imbued with a calm, wise energy. You can read it as a psychological thriller or a philosophical meditation but for me, primarily, it is the quest of a woman, a stranger in a strange city, as she comes to The Hague to escape New York, and struggles with power, inequality, justice, memory and love – or the absence of it. In the quietest way, it is a deeply transformative story.
