About this deal

Karen loves Monsters and sees herself as a monster. She wants to be turned into one to save her mother. The artwork here is beautiful. There are pieces of artwork from galleries drawn in like Karen did a sketch of them. There are magazine covers for each would be issues and sketches all over the place. It is made to look like notebook paper that Karen is sketching on. So as my good friend Jo recently stated, it's hard to review graphic novels. My normal, go-to criteria is overshadowed by the sheer fact that *most* of the reading experience is visual. The first volume was published by Fantagraphics on February14, 2017. The graphic novel won the 2017 Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel and two 2018 Eisner Awards, and was nominated for a 2018 Hugo Award. The French edition won the ACBD's Prix de la critique and the Fauve D'Or at the 2019 Angoulême International Comics Festival. My Favorite Thing Is Monsters has received critical acclaim and is considered by many critics to be one of the best graphic novels of 2017. My Favorite Thing Is Monsters’ stands at a point of intersection among many book-identities as well. Within the nascent canon of the graphic novel, Emil Ferris’ work finds itself in conversation with its bildungsroman foremothers, whispering secrets with Lynda Barry’s ‘One! Hundred! Demons!,’ queerly gabbing away with Alison Bechdel’s ‘Fun Home,’ sharing philosophical insights with David John Mazzucchelli’s ‘Asterios Polyp,’ and arm-wrestling against Franklin Christenson Ware’s ‘Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth’ and other Chicago-based graphic novels. But despite these resemblances, ‘My Favorite Thing Is Monsters’ resides in a classification all its own: it is a new genre of book that extends beyond the graphic novel, that transcends any attempt at compartmentalization. Alison Bechdel calls it a “spectacular eye-popping magnum opus” and “a visual phantasmagoria,” and Franklin Christenson Ware declares the book to be “absolutely astonishing.” ‘My Favorite Things Is Monsters’ is, to stake out an appropriate metaphor, a Frankenstein’s patchwork monster: a beast with a constitution borrowed from various places but transformed into something overwhelmingly, gloriously its own. Oh. My. God. This book. THIS BOOK. I was completely blow away by this, and honestly I have a difficult time expressing in words just how much I love it. And then you delve into the narrative, a sort of Harriet the Spy meets Anne Frank monster mash-up, with a dose of Where the Wild Things Arethrown in for good measure and wrapped around dozens of other symbols and stories. Fantoni, Lorenzo (April 18, 2018). "La mia cosa preferita sono i mostri, un fumetto tra cultura pop e dramma storico". Wired (in Italian) . Retrieved May 7, 2018. The story tries to focus on an ostracized 5th grader named Karen who lives in Uptown Chicago with her older brother Diego "Deeze" Reyes, a ladykiller whose love of art has been passed down the family tree, and their single mother, a caring but superstitious lady. A lover of horror magazines and Saturday night creature features, Karen doodles relentlessly and handles rejection by her best friend Missy by envisioning herself as a werewolf. These diversions offer little help as Karen is drawn into the mysterious death of their upstairs neighbor Anka Silverberg, a beguiling Jew who survived the Holocaust only to catch a bullet in her living room.

The graphic novel has received critical acclaim and is considered by many critics to be one of the best graphic novels of 2017. It has been praised for its intricate design, beautiful artwork, and unique storytelling style. Ferris’s use of B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography adds an extra layer of depth to the story. Powers, John (February 22, 2017). " 'My Favorite Thing Is Monsters' Is a Dazzling, Graphic Novel Tour-De-Force". NPR . Retrieved January 5, 2018. Still, these films often stood as allegory for real world horror of the time. Consider 1941’s “The Wolf Man,” written by Curt Siodmak. This book was amazing, I love it! I love this so much. As much as the Girl who Left Herself in August had loved me. Far greater and much more selfless than her love for me was her complete understanding of what I wanted from her. And that's what completely resonated with her. What I wanted from her and for her, was for her to leave. She did.Johnston, Rich (February 10, 2018). "My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris, the Best Reviewed Comic of 2017". Bleeding Cool News and Rumors . Retrieved February 14, 2018. The act of reading through a journal composed of perfect recall regarding events and illustrated through incredible art only possible through decades of training serving as the thoughts of a young girl still coming into an understanding of the world creates a balance between verisimilitude and artificiality. We are both engrossed in this deeply personal firsthand experience and distantly observing the sheer magnitude of the art. Fleming, Mike Jr. (March 30, 2017). "Graphic Novel 'My Favorite Thing Is Monsters' Sells to Sony". Deadline . Retrieved March 2, 2019. Fast-forward a few hundred years and we land at Emil Ferris’ ‘My Favorite Thing Is Monsters.’ Emil Ferris’ epistolary graphic novel is a bildungsroman. Karen Reyes, Emil Ferris’ young narrator, visualises herself as a monster. A literal monster — something of a vampire, perhaps, although she defies simple categorization — she is even equipped with an under-bite fang. Karen Reyes’ obsession with monsters and monstrosity stems, however, not only from feeling like a monster but also from her desire to bond with her brother Deeze. He gives her comic novels with hints of monsters, and the covers of these comic novels form an interstitial narrative that interrupts and complicates the main story. While Karen Reyes’ monstrosity makes her feel like an outsider, she also has a deep faith in monsters. To her, monsters are saviours.

I mean, sure, I could break it down by saying it's about a ten-year-old girl in late 60's Chicago who identifies deeply with b-movie horror monsters but also identifies with being a private eye, who knows something fishy is going on when her neighbor, a survivor of the Holocaust is found dead after having been shot in the heart, moved from the living room to the bedroom, and being ruled as a suicide.Read this for the fourth time in less than a year and a half, in part because I have now taught it three times in that span of time for different classes. This time I read it for my summer graphic novels and comics class. This is the first of two huge volumes, and who knows when that second volume will come out [September 22, 2022, I just said!]. The first volume itself took many years to finally see the light of day, so we will just have to be patient. This in part defines the serialized reading experience: Waiting (and trying to remember what happened when you first began reading).
