About this deal

Another difference between the two boots is their weight. The X Ultra 3 GTX is slightly lighter than the X Ultra 2 Mid GTX, making it easier to wear for long periods. The stitching is strong though, and we also expect the GTX lining to preserve the waterproofing for a long time. 2. Traction Those with wider feet might find the toe box restrictive (although Salomon sells the X Ultra 3 Mid in wide sizes). This hiking boot has a mid-cut design that provides extra support and protection to the ankles, which is crucial when navigating rough terrain.

However, even after the most rigorous assessment and testing, there is no better way to be absolutely sure than to have the boots on your feet for an extended period of time. We therefore offer our Home Trial Period which gives you the opportunity to wear the boots around your house to give you an indication of how they feel before you venture outside. We recommend that during the Home Trial Period that you wear the boots for as long as possible and at different times of the day, wear them up and down stairs, when moving around and when resting, you can even sleep in them if you want. In cold weather, however, the waterproof membrane can be quite reliable in keeping your feet warm and dry. 5. Weight Now that your boots are done up properly stand up on your tiptoes and walk on the spot on the balls of your feet as if you are walking up a steep hill. If your heels lift more than approximately 5mm from the footbed you may need to pull the laces tighter, or the boots may just be the wrong shape for you.

The shoe feels comfortable out of the box, with good ankle support and a soft tongue, designed to keep debris away. The X Ultra 3 has a more durable outsole, which provides better traction on slippery surfaces. It also has an improved heel design, which gives better stability and support. You should now be able to see approximately 2 cm (about an index fingers width) of the footbed poking out in front of your toes.

The first thing you'll notice when you slip these on is just how instantly comfortable they are; they hug your feet, feeling secure yet slipper-like. Unlike boots of old, the X Ultra family are designed to be comfortable straight from the box, providing a comfortable experience from day one. X Ultra footwear is based upon Salomon's trail running shoes but featuring a little more support and stiffness for days out in the hills. I will say, 48 lugs is a pretty large amount of lugs, with mud likely to get caked in between in particularly bad conditions. Two different types of rubber are strategically placed on the sole, resulting in a more intense grip. A special patterned area on the heel grabs terrain more aggressively, giving you more control when you’re moving along at a healthy clip. Features Top-notch build quality: The X Ultra 3 Mid is showing very little wear after well over a year of consistent use.We also felt that the gusseted tongue of the Quest 4 is tougher and provides better water resistance when crossing creeks. If you can see this amount of space then you are pretty much on the way to making sure that your boots are the correct size. This space between your toes and the end of the footbed ensures that you will not stub your toes on the inside of the boot when you descend. This can be excruciatingly painful. If you can’t see this amount of space then it’s a good bet that the boots will be too small. These Gore-Tex boots also feature a protective toe cap and mudguard, which add an extra layer of protection against water and help you shed mud before it gets the uppers wet.

The Keen Targhee III Mid Waterproof is a more stable hiking boot than the X Ultra 3 GTX. It has a stronger construction and can withstand rough terrain better. As I said above, the Advanced Chassis on the X Ultra 3 is excellent for support, but only if it works well with the lacing system.

Another area where the boot may not perform ideally is durability. While the boot is built with good synthetic materials that make it super light, it wears out faster than leather. Do We Recommend Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX for Hiking? As we walked in the wide version of these Gore-Tex boots on the Bryce Canyon’s Rim Trail, they proved supportive, and there were only a few sections of the path where they struggled to maintain traction. The padded collar is comfortable, although, on slippery surfaces and more technical terrain, we felt that this great boot is not as supportive as a high-cut model. In practice, there was definitely a noticeable level of control through the ankle. This is the main reason I would still recommend these for longer hikes and you’re less likely to roll your ankle thanks to this. Salomon lacing that works well if it works for you
