About this deal

Below are the basic skills and technical aspects that a football player should take under consideration when trying to master the art of the shot.

This very simple drill is used by all the top teams – simply because it works. One player stands in the ‘D’, and the person shooting starts the drill by passing to that player from around twelve yards away. The player in the ‘D’ simply lays the ball off, and the shooter runs forward to take the shot. The player making the lay-off should start from the left of the ‘D’ if the shooter is right-footed, and vice versa. It’s always a good idea to spend some time working on the weaker foot too. Turn and shoot Whether you’re new to football, or have been playing for a while and are looking to take your skills to the next level, the hundreds of different techniques required to reach pro status can be intimidating. From strong communication among teammates, to being constantly aware of the opponents around you, there is certainly a lot to consider each time you hit the pitch. Even with so many other things to learn, however, one of the most important elements of your game is to learn how to shoot a football. Shooting the ball low is often more effective than high in the air (read our article, How to Shoot a Soccer Ball to learn why). Dribble the ball as fast as possible five metres to the first cone, and come to a complete stop, placing your foot on top or in front of the ball.

Turn and shoot

Stand in front of an agility ladder or cones or marked squares on concrete that are spaced about five metres apart from one another. In football, no one skill is more important than any other — at least in the eyes of a coach. But there’s little doubt that fans love the ability to score goals. In many cases, this skill is instinctive. But to perfect it, you must put in the hours on the training pitch. And you must work on your technique. Create space for yourself; you may have the best shot in the world, but if you can’t get yourself into a position where an open strike presents itself, your skill will go wholly untested. That’s why before you consider taking a shot, you need to create the space on the field where the opportunity to take a shot will materialize. Sprinting is a key component of football and it also builds strength and endurance—two qualities this drill helps with.

Be aware of opposing defenders; you can’t shoot unless you have the ball, and if you aren’t aware of opposing defenders you surely won’t have it for long. For this reason you need to be aware of where the defenders are, and take your shot only when the defense opens up. If this is not the case, it is probably best to make a pass to a teammate, keep your head in the game and wait for an opportunity to present itself. Leg position; the reason why you see top players around the world scoring brilliant goals with such power is simple, because of their leg position. The way to generate such power through the ball is to lift your striking leg as high as you can, prior to striking the ball. This will give you more of a swing to striking the ball therefore you generate more power through the ball. There are many different ways to shoot the ball in football. You can shoot with the instep, with the inside of the foot, the outside, and even the toe. You can drive the ball hard, make it curve in or out or chip it.
