About this deal
I get that this is probably an important theme for a young adult audience to start thinking about, but this is meant to be a mystery series. It was approached in a way that didn't come across as being too heavy-handed on the social justice front, and it didn't completely overshadow the overarching storyline.

Siblings, cousins, and friends work together closely—they have a high degree of independence but do not lack parental oversight. He has written many other number one bestsellers including collaborations with President Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton, stand-alone thrillers and non-fiction. in this series, this episode explores the very real tension between police and the communities they serve. Alex Cross has taught his son the values he needs to solve the mystery: intelligence, persistence, and logic. Just don't put "Secret Detective" in the title when there's no mystery or detective work in the book. It’s supposed to be a big deal to get chosen for the children’s prayer at my church, especially on Christmas Eve.

The first book was about Ali's missing friend Gabe and the Second is about a girl he likes who gets shot in her mothers concert. As he tries to have himself heard, Ali becomes the scapegoat for the police, with many feeling he is only spouting what his father professes at home. When he finally gets to have his say, he knows this is his chance to try and heal at least a tiny bit of the hurt in his neighbourhood. He doesn't always do what he's told (like when he sneaks out at night to save a friend, or gets on his PS4 when he's grounded, also to save a friend) but accepts the consequences when it catches up with him. I got this book because it was written by Patterson, not realizing that it was a juvenile book, accually book for preteens.
In fact, if anyone had asked me, I would have told them there was only one thing I wanted for Christmas that year.
