It is fast paced with murder, mystery, intrigue, a likable, strong and capable female protagonist, a kind and caring male protagonist, a sweet child, a heroic dog and vividly described settings. Val Sorensen is the person assigned to be his bodyguard and the firm is hired to investigate the incident. When Elijah narrowly escapes an attempted kidnapping, Kaj doesn’t trust the police to guard them and instead hires Broussard Investigations to keep them safe.Val is the survivor of a brutal attack from which she still has flashbacks making her a flawed but admirable character. Kaj (“spelled K-a-j, but pronounced Kai , rhyming with pie ”) is a public prosecutor who has made a name for himself in the six months he’s lived in New Orleans. If you haven’t read one of Karen’s books yet but love a good thriller or some seriously sexy romance, then pick one up! Beneath Dark Waters is the second book in Karen Rose's New Orleans series and brings readers back to the world of Broussard Investigations. As the title suggests, water, in all its variations, is central to these tales of lost love, memory, and transformation.

Rose even references Scarlett from the Cincinnati series, which, for me, was one of my favorite parts of the book. A great read that manages to encompass suspense, danger, murder and romance in a way that held me gripped, holding my breath as I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. However, these strong protagonists with strong senses of determination were easy to get behind and hope that they succeed in their endeavors. Her latest assignment as the bodyguard to ten-year-old Elijah Cardozo reminds her why--Val is a kick ass guardian with a tender heart. The plot is full of chasing down leads and interviewing people as well as plenty of danger for those involved.
