About this deal

The guys that run it are knowledgeable and passionate about film photography and always take the time to give you advice and send examples of photos taken on a particular camera. It might not produce “portfolio” images, but it’s a reminder that shooting film isn’t all about “fine art” photography. Known as the Autoboy Tele 6 in Japan and the PRIMA TELE in Europe, it’s a fully automatic autofocus camera with both full-frame (24x36mm) and half-frame (17x24mm) formats as well as two focal lengths: 35mm and 60mm. The original Canon Sure Shot was a great success, notably one of the first 35mm point and shoot cameras to feature autofocus. The camera does have a LCD counter and battery display The only remaining controls are a rocker switch for the zoom and the shutter button.

It’s still film, you’re still limited to 72 images, and you’re still paying for the materials/development/scanning, so there is still that voice in the back of your head telling you not to waste shots. One of the last Canon Sure Shot 35mm camera to feature a dual-lens system was the 80 Tele, released in 1995. Compact and lightweight, the Sure Shot 60 Zoom measures 121x68x44 mm and weighs just 245g, making it a convenient choice for on-the-go photography. I recommend this camera for first-timers to analog photography and those looking to get back into shooting on film. I’m more willing to take “risky” shots when it’s just 1/72nd of my roll, I’m not taking things so seriously, and – while perhaps not portfolio-worthy – I end up with a multitude of fond memories and surprisingly sharp images.By the mid 1990s, camera technology had improved significantly and it was now possible for to produce zoom lenses for affordable, compact cameras like the Canon Sureshot series. Be advised: the switch is right behind the film gate so you can not switch mid-roll, so you have to commit when you’re loading the film. You’ll have an even wider range of available film speeds with 25 – 3200 ISO, but the trade off is the reduced max shutter speed of just 1/250.

In this time of self-isolation I’ve noticed that I’m not looking at the “fine art” prints on my wall, I’m looking at my memories, my friends, the objectively bad but highly sentimental images filling my photo books. No such worries materialized, though, as this 2-decade old camera proved it was still up to the task of capturing great images. The (New) Sure Shot looks incredibly similar to the original, and the majority of the features are unchanged. In low light it triggers flash in a slow synchronization mode (effectively slowing shutter to catch background light as well as triggering flash with a small aperture). Check out the Canon Camera Museum Sure Shot Series Page to find the specs for any additional models.

And anyways, I’m much more likely to have the half-frame on me than any of my SLRs or medium format bodies, so I’m more likely to capture the image in the first place. Date imprinting is also available, allowing you to add timestamps to your pictures, even in the panorama format. The wide angle/telephoto rocker switch to the right of the viewfinder felt intuitive and was springy without feeling cheap. The clam shell design and pop-up flash of the Canon Sure Shot 70 Zoom are very similar in style to the popular Olympus Mju II.

An interesting quirk to this particular model is that the Japanese versions (aka the Canon Autobody Juno) featured an option to shoot panoramic images and regular sized images, even on the same roll of film.Potentially the weirdest model of the bunch, the Canon Sure Shot Owl was manufactured for export only, and never released in Japan. We’ll send you exciting photography interviews, crazy tips and tricks, competitions giveaways, and unmissable offers. I found the auto mode was more than adequate for my daytime shooting needs and provided vivid and sharp exposures over the course of a day. The first model to switch from a prime, fixed-length lens to a dual-lens system was the Canon Sure Shot Telemax. Beyond just the size of the camera, the format itself allowed for more experimentation, more fun, more freedom to just take a shot because it might turn out nicely.
