About this deal

When they arrive, Ffion tells Leo the backstory of the property and why it is not viewed highly by the locals. Leo and Ffion head to The Shores, they find out Johnty was doing coke with Ashleigh all night and had an alibi for the murder time. Layers of historical and social context deepen the allure of this icy murder mystery set in North Wales.

On the one hand the Welsh names slows the reading a little as your brain tries to figure out how to pronounce them each time. Ffion and Leo must navigate their own tension—sexual and otherwise—as well as the historic tension between their countries and the extreme hierarchy of social class as it pertains to both their wealthy victim and their suspects. Ffion and Leo head over to The Shore, a fancy property owned by Rhys, to inform his family he has been found. She suspects that Johnty is having an affair – she goes looking for evidence and finds crushed up powder.

We find out there was an incident in his high school years where he was bullying a classmate, Ceri – who is now the postwoman. They also had to lay off multiple workers and ended up hiring in Huw Ellis to finish the job and owe him 30k. Leo also admits to Ffion about what happened with his son and leaving him in a locked car to capture the perp – which earned him a commendation. As a thank you, when you sign up, I'll also send you my personal reading list: fifty books I loved, that you might love too. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker.

The back and forth between the present and the days leading up to the death in different people’s perspectives helped to build the character development. This superb blend of psychological thriller and police procedural from bestseller Mackintosh ( Hostage) begins with the discovery of Rhys Lloyd’s body on New Year’s Day in freezing Mirror Lake, which straddles North Wales and England. In this story, an influential musician disappears, and later found dead, after a New Year’s Eve party that he was hosting. A musician turned real estate developer, the true mystery of The Last Party is how come no one offed Rhys sooner! Leo finds out that Elijah has been suspended because it seems the tests he is running were compromised by other tests he has going on at his place – he has been stealing all sorts of samples to run.In October 2016, the French translation of I Let You Go ( Te Laisser Partir) won "best international novel" at the Cognac Festival Prix du Polar awards. After he has gotten the room set up, he reaches out to a lawyer to start the process to keep his son from moving out of the country with his ex.

With deep insider knowledge of the police system, being a resident of Wales, Ms Mackintosh is in a good position to bring the believability to the story. We meet Ffion and Leo in the opening pages as they crawl out of bed after a one-night stand and then when they are shocked that they are assigned to the same case.

I really liked that Clare stuck to some of the Welsh roots and used names and words that were Welsh. The book starts out with Ffion waking up on New Years Day next to a man that she met at a bar the night before. If you like a good police procedural, a mystery with lots of human interest or just want to visit a charming town with secrets, The Last Party is for you! He makes a rowboat for the twins to get in Rhys good graces and delivers it, assuming he has the business. King uses the phrase keeping it on the down-low in a way that suggests he probably doesn’t understand how this phrase is currently used—and has been used for quite a while.

The Broadchurch vibes of haunting mystery surrounding around the tight knitted community makes you drawn into the story a little bit more! Clare’s novel After the End was published in June 2019 and spent seven weeks in the Sunday Times hardback bestseller chart, and in June 2021, Clare’s locked room thriller, Hostage, flew straight into the top ten. The residents of The Shore also have reasons to wish the developer and cabin owner, Rhys Lloyd, dead. A compelling murder mystery told with warmth, humor and enough red herrings to keep even the most seasoned crime reader guessing.

We are—well, ask Bigfoot, as Brooks does in this delightful yarn, following on his bestseller World War Z (2006). Everyone in this book seems like they have a motive and the author kept me guessing until the very end! The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family―and Ffion has her own secrets to protect. The lake his body is found that divides England and Wales so two detectives from different jurisdictions are in charge, teaming up for solving the case. I loved the tense atmosphere in this book; I read this book in one night which wasn’t my intention when I sat down to read it!
