About this deal

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit given to a ten-year-old girl named Abilene [1] by her grandmother in the 1930s. Strong themes of family, belonging, class, love and loss were seen throughout and I shed a little tear when I finished it! And along the way, we are shown a true miracle: even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again. This is a heart-warming book about an ungrateful china rabbit who takes meaningful journeys across America when he is thrown overboard on a cruise trip. With that said, I felt weird about the last few chapters at first, but as we finished it all came together.

Edward finds that he deeply cares for this girl and she cares for him until she dies of an unknown illness. One of my favorite tropes is when a character learns about the power of love and I feel this book is a great example.Ibatoulline outdoes himself; his precisely rendered sepia-tone drawings and color plates of high artistic merit are an integral part of this handsomely designed package.

I have a friend who believes that there are two types of pet owners: the ones who must immediately find another pet companion, after their beloved pet dies, and the ones who can never have another pet again, after they must bury their best friend. The reader travels with a china rabbit named Edward Tulane through, as the synopsis states, "the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis". Discussion around where to place Edward at the start of the story would form an interesting debate – was he happy in his life of luxury? His journey takes the reader through a captivating tale of great love and tragic loss, filled with suspense.

The illustrations are muted, pencil sketches with details, when needed, to emphasise that part of the story. You definitely feel a wave of emotion as you travel through the narrative with the ameliorated china rabbit. A timeless tale by the incomparable Kate DiCamillo, complete with stunning full-color plates by Bagram Ibatoulline, honors the enduring power of love. In spite of that, he finds happiness with the couple until their daughter comes along to ruin everything by sending him to the town's garbage dump.

Her grandmother relates a fairy tale about a princess who never felt love; she then whispers to Edward that he disappoints her.Use information retrieval and inference skills to build up the background story of these characters.

This is one of those eternally relevant children's stories, that can be read by all ages throughout all of time. Although it’s never explicitly stated how Edward received consciousness, it’s implied that Abilene’s grandmother, Pellegrina, had something to do with it. I fought back tears while reading and had to let it sit for awhile before reviewing it because it dealt with some tough material. The elegant narrative voice will appeal to lower KS2 pupils, whilst the themes explored could also be used with upper KS2. Edward's journey is miraculous in that the little china rabbit from which the book gets its name learns to love out of his many losses, which starts with losing his straw hat and ends with losing his hardened heart. The ending was beautiful and watching Edward's character change and grow was a great insight in to how when you fall from grace you become humble.
