About this deal

The mystery resembles the real-life case of the Jarmans, the sixteenth-century owners of the Ostrich Inn in Slough (Berkshire), who killed wealthy travellers by tipping them into a barrel of boiling water via a hinged bed in one of the bedrooms. Particularly harsh when, not long after the apparent murder of Charlotte's mother, Charlotte has just learned that her mother was in fact her mother's twin sister impersonating her after a horrific accident fifteen years earlier, and Charlotte was upset enough by this revelation to attempt suicide over it. These two impossibilities work well together so I don’t want to suggest that one of these should have been cut but it does mean that the episode already seems really full. Pickles said of the episode: "It’s the gentle, facially expressive, deeply sceptical, somehow slightly daft performance of Davies as Creek that makes this sleuthing drama such a glory.

Almost a dozen actors were considered before Susan Belbin saw Alan Davies during a rehearsal for a sitcom. Jonathan is quick to announce that he knows how the theft was done, but will not explain due to his dislike of Le Fley, who recently published a negative review of Adam's show. Two versions of the song exist, one being that which was used for the video and the other is a track on The Real Tuesday Weld's 2008 album The London Book of the Dead. He stated that reprising the role after such a lengthy hiatus was initially strange, and that: "I couldn't remember my lines on the first day. Guest stars: Dinah Sheridan, Nicholas Ball, Emma Kennedy, Hetty Baynes, Benjamin Whitrow, Tom Goodman-Hill and William Vanderpuye. It was as though Renwick, who also directed, had been given 120 minutes to fill without having enough material to fill them – the narrative equivalent of an interminable jam session based around some fundamentally decent riffs. An artist is found dead at his home, while his mistress is found bound, blindfolded and gagged with tape.

Davies was invited round to talk to Renwick and "turned up in his duffle coat with straggly hair and a broad grin [and] was self-evidently the closest match yet to Creek as we had always seen him". Initially, Jonathan was only brought in to investigate because he was asked by Maddy due to her having a professional connection to the crime in her role as a journalist, or because it involved an old friend of theirs (such as one case featuring Jonathan being contacted by an old friend of his mother's after her husband was impaled by a sword in a sealed room). The trio are backed by a three-piece band featuring Martin Kolarides on guitar, Henrik Jensen on double bass and Peter Ibbetson on drums. Later, a policewoman is strangled in a school gym from which the killer again had no means of escape. With Maddy gone to America on a book promotion tour, Jonathan teams up with Carla Borrego, a theatrical agent representing an escapologist who is being hired for Adam's show. Using his powers of deduction and belief that nothing is as it seems, Creek races against time to uncover a number of intriguing clues which lead him to the unbelievable truth and the revealing of one of the greatest acts of illusion he has encountered yet.

This time we follow Adam Klaus as he plans to invest in 3D porn and starts to date a star of that industry. Both characters were played by actresses — Kate Isitt and Sarah Alexander — who were also main characters in Coupling. The trio started a Pledge Music campaign to crowd fund their new album (along with an optional bonus edition of remixes) with the help of fans. A year later she would appear with Alan Davies in Whites but she is probably best known for her role as Jen in The I. There have been other Creek episodes where there is an action sequence coupled with the reveal of a solution (the first episode of the previous season for instance) but I think this is one of the best.
