Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. He is in crisis following the suicide of a close friend and receipt of a letter concerning a personal issue which could change his life forever.

Baldacci is to be congratulated on how he sets up the story, creates three-dimensional characters, and layers seemingly unrelated situations one on top of the other until the resolution becomes startlingly clear. A thriller with bloody murders and plenty of suspects and featuring an unlikely partnership between two FBI investigators. What at first seems cut and dry is anything but: Not only did the judge have more enemies than Decker can count—from violent gang members, drug dealers, and smugglers to a resentful ex-husband—but the bodyguard presents additional conundrums that muddy the waters even further. Fans of Baldacci’s 'memory man'character will be highly satisfied with Long Shadowsand anxiously await the next installment in the series. Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.

Maybe, but the sasquatches whom the volcano displaced contributed to the statistics, too, if only out of self-defense. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. He said the words he needed to say to his wife and child, and then rose from the cold ground and glanced to the left.Decker had accepted the challenge, and in doing so had proved his younger self wrong and his older self correct.

Because this is the latest book in a series, his character has already been fine tuned and that makes it for us, readers, a great character. He had come close to filling it on several occasions, once by his own hand, while staring at his murdered child as she sat, in death, in her own house. He leaned back against the wall and let gravity transport his big body down to the floor, similar to the one on which Lancaster’s corpse was now lying. He was to come to the Washington Field Office immediately, or so commanded his superior at the Bureau. But as they work together, their mutual respect rises and—alas—the tension between them fades almost completely. And she was the central character in If It Bleeds, a novella in the 2020 collection of the same name.

And here, although she pops in briefly, she seemed to be quite different to the character I knew and loved. If he could just come up with the right words that would let this episode end well when it could so very easily go the other way.

Sandy suddenly caught sight of Decker, broke free from her startled father’s grip, and ran over to him.
