About this deal

Still, one should keep in mind that these films were made almost 20 years ago and that CG effects and blue screen techniques have greatly improved since then in newer films. The resolution looks totally natural as if 4k is the way the films were supposed to be viewed from day one. But the poor-ish, inconsistently color-graded, visually outdated images of his Lord of the Rings can be defended on similar grounds.

By fine-tuning his images, by increasing their resolution, Jackson is making the patterns easier to perceive.

No, it’s not 100% perfect in terms of video quality, but it is one very unforgettable experience in 4K and most especially in Dolby Atmos. Peter Jackson, at this point in his career, was best known for his work directing, writing, and producing such films as Bad Taste (1987), Dead Alive (1992), Heavenly Creatures (1994), and The Frighteners (1996). Harmony Korine's Aggro Dr1ft aspires to be a new kind of post-movie non-film, but for something featuring a neon-orange Travis Scott on a speedboat full of mercenaries in demon masks, it's just boring.

These three films were all shot on 35mm film using the Super 35 cinematographic process, with such a large variety of cameras including some from Arricam, Arriflex, Mitchell Cameras, and Moviecam Compact. It’s a bit slower-packed, less filled with action and special effects, and serves to properly introduce the characters, most of whom remain alive throughout the sequels (with the exception of Sean Bean, who coincidentally Benioff and Weiss killed off in the first episode of Game of Thrones).

Once they reach the Elvish realm of Rivendell the Hobbits form part of the anti-Sauron fellowship, which includes Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Boromir (Sean Bean), elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and of course Gandalf.

Instead of thinking about how to make the story of an annoying middle-aged shut-in forced to venture outside actually, you know, compellingly tellable, he was thinking visually.Classics like Lawrence of Arabia and the Hitchcock collection all the way down to every last Rambo and Resident Evil were 4K’d in 2020, not to mention video games, TV shows, and Top Gun to boot. Furthermore, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy featuring remastered Blu-ray discs of the theatrical and extended versions of the 3 films will also be released in the fourth quarter 2021, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. I never get tired of watching it, indeed, it seems to get better with every watch, there is so much to every scene; a truly magnificent piece of film making.
