I started off a little cynical about the strategy to Harry Potterize Gotham with young wanna-be crime solvers, and with a girl-focused team, but then it sort of grew on me. Bruce Wayne makes appearances a couple times, so there's the promise of that for future issues, after we get the academy setting and characters set up. She turned to reading and journaling, finding particular solace in a book about Millie Jane Cobblepot, an outcast of the wealthy Cobblepot crime family that resided in 19th-century Gotham.

The story felt more like a Lumberjanes story than a Gotham Academy one with it being set in the woods and featuring mystical creatures, but that's not a bad thing for me since I love their adventures. The Lumberjane girls are my favorite and I enjoyed Gotham Academy and I was pleasantly surprised to find that their personalities didn't overlap too much. Amity was the original Calamity and Olive's ancestor, whose possessions plagued her descendants (including Olive's mother) and coerced them into becoming Calamity against their will. Maybe if I'd read it in physical form where I could have read it without squinting and actually studied the art in detail, I might have enjoyed it more. I don't love that despite feeling packed in with potential, it feels overly long at 8 issues and yet still misses a lot of what I'd have hoped it'd accomplish.

I had a soft spot for Maps Mizoguchi, Olives ex-boyfriend's little sister, she felt very much like Jubilee from X-men and I love her. The artwork from Karl Kerschl is easily his best work, absolutely beautiful, very atmospheric, and the design work on the characters is excellent. Fate Worse than Death: Pom considers being locked in a room with nothing to do but watch Facts Of Life and Family Ties episodes to be this. In October 22, 2020, Stevenson stated that the show is in "development, not production" and that there is "no crew at this time.

But it did sort of underscore the thing that's niggled at me about Gotham Academy that I haven't really been able to put my finger on, that everything, all the time, is all about Olive.The two investigated reports of ghost on campus, joining forces with Pomeline Fritch, a haughty bully of Olive's with an interest in the occult, and Colton Rivera, a delinquent with lock-picking skills. But while the art was great, there were too many characters and the plot was so paper thin that, had I not been invested in the lumberjanes, I would have dropped this book. While Jo or April take the lead and forge ahead, Molly will watch the back of the group, preferring to look after Mal (often anxious), or Ripley (often distracted). Five best friends at summer camp take friendship to the max when they team up to defeat the strange forces lurking within the surrounding forest. It's possible to collect the issues secondhand, but it will likely be much more expensive and troublesome than picking up the collected editions.
