Characterised by the distinctive flavour of the 'mandoria-amara' or bitter almond, the name Amaretto means 'a little bitter' in Italian. Legend has it that in 1525 the artist Bernardino Luini, a pupil of Leonardo Da Vinci, was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna of the Miracles in Saronno. One of my favourite uses is the Tiramisu Cappuccino based on espresso, amaretto flavoured milk and a lot of cocoa powder. I bought this to pour over unflavoured ice cream that I made from just double cream and condensed milk. Today George's grandson Oliver runs a company with manufacturing plants on 3 continents and sells a range of over 140 flavours of syrup.
