I was privileged recently to interview Barnsley’s modern day answer to Ann Lister, the legendary Kate Charlesworth about her graphic novel “Sensible Footwear” for the Buckinghamshire Archives History Festival in November 2021. She has produced science comics for New Scientist ("Life, the Universe and (Almost) Everything") and The Independent.

There was a real sense of inclusivity and immediacy in her work then and that has continued to be a feature of her art. This is part graphic-memoir and part graphic-history text which starts in the 1950s when author Kate Charlesworth was born. Look for CoF results higher than the minimum requirements set out in annex A of EN ISO 20345/6/7: 2004 (A1:2007) - the standards for safety, protective and occupational footwear.A lively graphic memoir that doubles as a comprehensive history of modern British LGBTQ+ life: it’s a wonderful reminder of just how much fun, love and friendship has been had in the fight for queer rights. Individually, they reveal different lives and accomplishments that enrapture in their own way, but together they show that graphic memoir is almost evidence of queer theory, in that it demonstrates how multiple identities are worn in different situations across a lifetime.

PPE in my opinion is something that is worn to provide additonal protection to what workers normally wear. It's easy to see why - it's not hard to find yourself getting in the car wearing sandals during the summer, heavy boots in winter or heels at any time. My favorite style used is by far the technique used to represent present day: vivid watercolors topped with loosely lined colored pencil in a zesty orange hue. Officially published this Thursday, Kate Charlesworth’s Sensible Footwear: A Girl’s Guide underlines what a strong 2019 it’s been for Myriad Editions who, in the same year Myriad Creative Director Corinne Pearlman was inducted into our Broken Frontier Hall of Fame, have put out some of their most eagerly anticipated books to date.She cites the two young women who posted a photograph of their bloodied faces after they were attacked on a London bus in June, outing themselves in the process. With some footwear the surface profiles do not provide the improvement in slip resistance that might be expected. Really informative - it is packed full of factual and anecdotal history of the Gay Rights movement in the UK but also the life experiences of Kate as a lesbian woman. She was outrageously forthright and an extremely strong character – she probably would have had to be to have the guts to do that.
