About this deal

It is only through a developing relationship with Kei that he can finally see how thin he has become, how lifeless and emaciated he appears to the world. One night the woman who appears to be the only other residential tenant in the building shows up at his doorstep with a half-empty bottle of champagne, looking for some company, but he pretends he is too busy and so she leaves. But while I did think it had a good hook, I struggled to actually care about the characters or what was going on in the book.

Harada is a very tragic figure to begin with, and by the end of the book I was really pulling for him. Our resources are crucial for knowledge lovers everywhere—so if you find all these bits and bytes useful, please pitch in. In reading these early scenes, it reminded me too much of films or books where it is usually about a lonely male protagonist who finds himself in a noirish situation where he falls for a mysterious woman who awakens what’s dead inside. Then he meets a man who looks and sounds just like his father, and whose wife looks and sounds like his mother. A short time later, on his birthday, Hideo is drawn back to the neighbourhood where he spent his childhood, before his parents were killed in a hit-and-run accident.

The story reaches its climax, when the protagonist changes visibly and Kei gets to know about his ghost-parents. They have not aged and greet him with a mild, wry bemusement and easygoing welcome, as if Adam was home early from a term at uni and wanted his laundry doing. There was very little to absorb me in this book except for the laid-back air, the cozy mystery at the heart of the novel, which, if you read the product description, lays it out for you plainly.

Graham Broadbent and Sarah Harvey of Blueprint Pictures first pitched the project to Yamada in June 2017. Estranged from his son, Shigeki, at odds with his ex-wife Ayako for dating who’s now engaged to his occasional friend and co-worker, Mamiya, Hideo spends his time in solitude, concealing his feelings—whether it be anger, or confusion.Older viewers may run headlong toward the film’s despondency, finding solace, even catharsis, in its haunting ache. It sounds like the starting point for a dark, terrifying descent into mania and doubt, or else a paranoiac thriller. I’m not one of those people who thinks you have to cast a queer actor in a queer role, but for this role, I did want to because I was trying to unpick some nuances of a certain generation of gay people,” Haigh said. A few days later Kei, an attractive woman fifteen years his junior shows up at his apartment with a bottle of champagne in hand. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, after the 1988 Japanese film The Discarnates directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi.
