Moomin World ( Muumimaailma in Finnish, Muminvärlden in Swedish) is the Moomin Theme Park especially for children. The "little creature" they meet and adopt (named Sniff in later books) is reminiscent of Piglet, Winnie-the-Pooh's friend, being easily frightened and rather timorous through most of the story. And thus, while I do appreciate finally having had the opportunity to read, to experience Tove Jansson's very first Moomin book and cheer the fact that her The Moomins and the Great Flood was in 2006 translated from the original Swedish into English (as well as subsequently into other languages), is again in print and as available as the rest of the Moomin series (since it does in fact clean up some loose ends and presents how the Moomins originally reach their valley, and also how they meet and in many ways become saddled with the intriguing and sometimes a trifle frustrating kangaroo-like creature who in the later Moomin novels is known as Sniff), I still have found The Moomins and the Great Flood only rather very mildly amusing and entertaining at best, and the novel's general writing style, its textual authorial presentation too scattered, too unfinished and too unpolished to be considered with more than two stars (and leave the truth and caveat that the sequels are definitely much superior and are to be in all ways preferred and recommended above The Moomins and the Great Flood which I really would only suggest for serious Moomin series fans and completists). Add to this mix the genius inventor Hodgkins, and a grand finale in which Moominpappa rescues a shipwrecked Moominmamma from the waves, and the fun becomes irresistible.I do not suffer books like this because I can afford to dispense with any meaning I may have missed - and the odds say I have - with examining The Moomins and the Great Flood. The Moomin stories concern several eccentric and oddly-shaped characters, some of whom are related to each other. On no account should anyone trying Tove Jansson for the first time start with this book, the original Moomin story, published in 1945 and recently translated into English for the very first time. Fruits they have never seen hang from the trees, the grass is fine-spun sugar, the snow is ice-cream, a burbling stream is green lemonade and Moominmamma sleeps under a chocolate tree.

Tove Jansson had already in the 1970s given her personal permission to the city of Hannō to build a small Moomin-themed playground there.

Tauro had died in June 1993 and some of Jansson's last lyrics were composed by Pohjola in cooperation with Jansson's heirs. As in all Jansson's work, nature is central, and her descriptions of it, wry and surprising, are the threads that lead you on. It's all a lot of fun, (sometimes it's almost as strange as Yellow Submarine) though I did think it a bit too trusting, not always explaining why they throw their lot in with people, and absolutely everyone turning out to be alright.Danger, threats as well as fears are present in the first book like they were present in people’s lives while the book was written. A main attraction is Moomin House, which is represented in Tove Jansson’s map from Finn Family Moomintroll. i love the way the moomin characters look in this book - they are just rough sketches of what would later evolve into the more round and sweet and familiar moomins of the later books. Jansson was a prolific artist, creating paintings, novels, children’s books and much more during her lifetime, but it’s her Moomin creations, beloved by children and adults alike the world over, that have most captivated audiences. Except one year when Moomintroll accidentally awakes and finds himself stranded and alone in a mysterious world blanketed with snow.

As a visual artist, illustrator and author, Jansson expanded and transformed her expression tirelessly up to the last years of her life. A great story for children, and I'm sorry that I didn't come to these books in time to read them to mine - I think I've a while to wait for grandchildren, but when they arrive Moomintroll will be waiting for them!Each book has a sense of the mystery and magic of the wilder world and its dangers, balanced by this sense of haven represented by family and home. Mischief and Mystery in Moominvalley, a production created by Get Lost and Found which included puppetry and a giant pop-up book set, toured the UK from 2018, with runs at London's Southbank Centre, Kew Gardens and the Manchester Literature Festival. The difference between this and the newer volumes is very easily spotted, especially in the artstyle. Moomin World is located on the island of Kailo beside the old town of Naantali, near the city of Turku in Western Finland.
