Popular culture is decked out with jabs at stupid people, from Dumb and Dumber (1994) to Baldrick in Blackadder. Written with a conversational style in part and formal in another, I suppose that is to be expected when you have multiple authors.A summary of my review is that I hate it, because it’s a terrible book that addresses important topics that deserve more serious attention, and because many people might love it – which is part of the problem, in that they will do so because it gives them license to be smug. Studies show that cynical idiots are so uncooperative and mistrustful that they miss out on professional opportunities, and therefore earn less than others do. It also explores our unconscious biases and how they affect the way we think and the difficulty in stopping them guiding our thoughts even when we recognise and acknowledge they are there. As mentioned, the book featured the odd inclusion of back-and-forth interviews between the short essays presented.
