About this deal

When that warm air rises through the colder air, it causes an updraft, or a change in wind direction. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.

The legendary Tornado developed exponentially from its original design during the Cold War as a conventional and nuclear bomber to be deployed in extremis against Soviet targets. Students really had a hard time with the narrative, confusing the boy waiting the tornado out with Pete as a boy talking about his adventures with a dog he finds after a storm. I’ve always been a curious person filled with wonder at our amazing world, and I love letting my imagination get taken away by a good book. Scientists have proposed that we have left the Holocene and entered the Anthropocene, the Age of Humans, to mark the significance of our increasingly dominant role in a changing environment. Named for the three states it hit— Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana—the tornado took three and a half hours to tear through 219 miles. This entire book is a poem if you go by my preferred definition, which is a string of words meant to evoke.

If you’re caught outside and can’t find shelter, look for a ditch, gulley, or just a flat piece of ground away from trees and cars. For me, this book is a thought-provoking quest into both the need for evocative literature on this topic and the hazards of drifting into science fiction or being dismissed as alarmist non-fiction. In this 2021 book, Fisher is able to strike the perfect balance between the “what’s so” and the “why” behind these historic storms (as well as with other types of natural disasters affecting New Englanders). In part, this was due to the particular tactics evolved by the Tornado force for their original role as a Cold War tactical nuclear bomber; crews flew at high speed (around 600 mph) and at heights of less than 100 feet (and sometimes as low as 30). In Illuminary, the main character Kamryn finds herself in the land of Ur after falling down a staircase. This was the second of four books read on my weekend with friends, and looking at the library of the four daughters. One day a small sea serpent falls from the faucet into the tub as a child is about to take a bath, and as the days go by and the serpent grows, they both realize that he needs to go back to the sea where he belongs. Catia Chien’s gorgeous illustrations are very expressive and a beautiful compliment to this lovely story of learning to let go and do what’s right. First, he managed to tell a story of about twenty odd people, including himself (from a rather tricky apersonal third-person perspective), covering several squadrons and three airbases. Some great detail about the Tornado aircraft and what it felt like to fly such an incredible machine, but also a lot about the many individuals whose personal experience this story details.
