Even though some of these stories were sad, I have a deep respect for these animals and the men who train them and go into war with them. Facing a global shortage of AK-47 ammunition, the duo encounters legendary arms dealer Henry Girard, who has access to massive unused weapon depots in Albania.

The two go to Albania to test the ammunition and win the contract, though Efraim learns they severely underbid their competitors. I have no memory of reading this novel in 2016 but it was a touching story of a brave dog during WWII. It was an emotional rollercoaster and I ended up in floods of tears either from happiness or sadness. Frankel goes through some history of war dogs as well as other "jobs" dogs have (airport security, therapy dogs).

I simply loved this book, gained so much insightful education and it’s inspired me to shout to the rooftops how great it is to be in America. There are some brief references to WWII and Vietnam as well as other historical comments on dogs in war throughout history, however the main focus of the book is modern day military handlers and their dogs. David spends his life savings on high-quality bedsheets to resell to retirement homes, but the venture fails.

If you’re a fan of Maria Goodavage’s “Soldier Dogs” or Jeff Kamen’s “Warrior Pups,” then Rebecca Frankel’s “War Dogs” makes a nice companion book to read or listen. A word of caution; some adult guidance would be needed to explain some of the terms used during the 1940’s. Enver reveals that he knows about the true reason of the repackaging and indirectly threatening to rat them out to US authorities, causing David to promise to get Efraim to pay him.It had some really great stories of the bond between the two and the usefulness of these relationships. Needing to dispose of these arsenals—including over 100 million rounds of AK-47 ammunition—in accordance with NATO treaties, and unable to deal directly with the US, Girard offers to make the deal through AEY. David asks what has happened to Bashkim, the Albanian driver, but Henry does not answer, instead offering David a briefcase of money in exchange for "no more questions. There's just enough grit, blood, and death to make it clear there's a real war going in, but it's light enough that it won't give children nightmares.

Some of the military words would be unfamiliar to younger readers, and some terms, such as the one used for a female dog, would need to be explained for readers who had only heard it used in a derogatory context. Preparing the shipment in Albania, David discovers virtually all the rounds are Chinese-made and illegal due to a US embargo; to conceal this, Efraim has the ammunition repackaged.

They are unable to establish contact with other elements of their force or their commanders, nor can they receive any intel on the enemy's numbers or locations. Jet, a well-trained black Labrador, is requisitioned by the Army, and soon Jet and her handler are sent to France on active duty where her ability to track the enemy and to rescue the wounded prove invaluable in this gripping tale of World War II. Frankel does a good job of capturing both the relationships between men and dogs as well as the environments they are in together.
