It was lots of fun and we laughed a lot getting it right.

I found this book extremely captivating to read and feel that children of a young age would find it exciting because throughout the book we are introduced to many different characters and stories. One could imagine children integrating well with the book. Charlie Cook would often curl up in a chair with his favourite book of the day, the first of which was entitled 'Shiver Me Timbers: The Story of an Old Sea Dog'. And in that book the old sea dog found a treasure chest, inside which was … yes, you've probably got it, a book! What is your favourite book? Could your class make a set of posters to advertise your favourite books? Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. Draw their attention to the title and the fact that it rhymes. You could try and think up other words which rhyme with book (hook, cook, look, took).

The book can be used throughout key stage one and two. At key stage one level it can be read to the class by the teacher during story time whilst the children enjoy the illustrations, and then read independently during key stage two once the children become more developed readers. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. Use publishing software to create your own story about a person who reads a book about a person who finds a book about… From kings and queens to aliens and ghosts, there’s something for everyone in Charlie’s amazing book!

A listening task could be to write down all the words they hear at the end of a sentence that rhyme. They could do this on their own with the first listening and then put any words they have written down onto the board. Compare and find any that rhyme. They can listen again and see if they find any other words which rhyme with their word bank they had previously compiled.
