About this deal

It tends to run about 45 minutes, though some games can be more like 90 if players are more defensive. On their turn, a player may instead choose to withdraw his forces to a neighboring territory he controls.

I wouldn’t say this expansion adds anything that’s absolutely necessary for an ideal Inis experience. Making this all more densely layered in the presence of epic deed tokens – you pick these up for some especially cunning activities conducted in the pursuit of victory. You need to calculate who you can and cannot attack, or create mighty combos that will leave your enemy no chance — but keep in mind that your enemy might have good red cards that might mess your plans up. In Inis, however, I felt like I could identify which cards would be beneficial to my opponent and keep those for my own uses. They clamber over the chairs and push people out of the way to make sure they’re the first one out of the dance hall and into the cool night air beyond. This makes the game not focused on a single thing or score, makes way for strategy, bluffing and thinking. A couple of my plays didn’t end up needing this, but this module avoids long, drawn out ties that can last for multiple turns.

Inis is a card drafting area control game with some interesting game end conditions and striking art. So that’s what you need to bear in mind here – this is a review of Inis as a game for ‘ Couples and Bestest Buds’. The ponderous beginning and drawn out end are relatively small tapers on an enjoyment curve that bulges generously towards ‘excellent’ in its most exciting moments. But they’re always powerful in some situation, so it’s usually possible to shift your strategy to incorporate them. Epic tale cards give you the opportunity to break the game a bit and make powerful moves that your enemy will not expect.

I was still the Brenn and had a single VC, so I’d win a lot of tiebreakers, but was at the mercy of the rest of the table due to the lost combat. Inis sounds great, I’ve heard a lot of good things about it and your review really makes me want to try it! If we’re playing a game where we’re big noble space empires fighting over a map, and someone’s choice of a “culture card” or an “auxiliary action” causes the dominant player to lose the game, that takes you out of what can be a powerfully immersive experience. The iron mine card for example lets you dial up the threat of combat by forcing an opponent to lose a clan member and a card.
