About this deal

She lives with her husband and four children near the Connecticut shore, where she divides her time between writing and laundry.

As Manuel aides his new friends in their preparations for the local county fair, he learns to open up, confronts his deepest fears, and even finds first love. In 1941, the island of Nassau, Bahamas, “is terrible for gossip,” recently widowed Lulu Randolph admits. This is another one of those books that deploys a plot device that seems to be SO WIDELY used now, by SO MANY authors, that completely annoys me. Lulu is sent to Nassau, Bahamas to cover a story for NY magazine and to get the scope on the Duke and Duchess. But as she infiltrates the Duke and Duchess's social circle, and the powerful cabal that controls the islands' political and financial affairs, she uncovers evidence that beneath the glister of Wallis and Edward's marriage lies an ugly—and even treasonous—reality. And how about that hypocritical relationship that Lulu demonstrated to Wallis for SO LONG and so entirely the opposite of any sincerity. latest novel introduces the resourceful and wonderfully articulate Lulu Randolph Thorpe, "a pedigree twenty-five-year-old feline, blessed with sleek, dark pelt and composure in spades.

Finally, into the last quarter of the book, the plot turns into something resembling espionage, though “resembling” is probably too strong a word.I loved this book, Beatriz Williams weaves a very interesting story of the Duke and Duchess, after abdicating the crown.

Readers will be spellbound by Williams’ elegant prose, fascinating characters and unforgettable settings while fully engrossed by the novel’s dual plots. I was just talking about PTSD with my kid the other day, so now I have the perfect book to pass on to him!As others have mentioned, the Duke and Duchess only appear peripherally, but I was so enthralled with what would happen to Elfriede and Lulu that I didn't even care. BookPage is a recommendation guide for readers, highlighting the best new books across all genres as chosen by our editors. Of course, there is some romance in the book as she crosses paths with the mysterious Benedict Thorpe.

This Caribbean paradise was an intriguing setting for all of the rich and famous as well as unsavory characters and spies, all creating an exciting and gripping tale. A second narrative set 40 years earlier focuses on Elfriede von Kleist, a new mother from rural Westphalia with postpartum depression so severe she has attempted suicide, causing her husband, the Baron, to dispatch her to a clinic in Switzerland. Then some strong amount of time go by (where these triggers are kept away), and maybe have these re-surface in the next school year. The New York Times bestselling author of The Summer Wives and A Certain Age creates a dazzling epic of World War II-era Nassau—a hotbed of spies, traitors, and the most infamous couple of the age, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Too soon, it seems that their only chance of saving Nina from being lost in history is to get themselves sentenced to the guillotine. I knew the Duke and Duchess were thought to be Nazi sympathizers, but other realities, such as the murder of Harry Oakes, gold mine owner, actually took place. In a European accent, Maarleveld also delivers the the account of a Swiss woman named Elfride, following her from 1900 through WWI, and recounting the lives of her descendants.
