I used a very diluted mixture of neutral orange to add more shadow shapes to the undersides, to give more definition to the fins and add a few details. When I first started painting it took me a while to figure out which colors to use and how to organize them. Sakura Koi will always have a place in my art supplies shelf because it is the very first watercolor set I ever used.

To make holding more convenient, there’s a little pull-down ring at the bottom of the sketchbox that you can slide over your finger. I personally chose the 48 count because I thought it would give me a good range of colors while also being affordable. It can still look good when blending, though, you just need to work a little bit harder and be more deliberate than with an artist grade set. The sponges can be used to clean pigment off the brush, remove excess water, or to make textured patterns on the artwork. You can see in the reference photo this is another typical characteristic of the markings found on koi fish.

One thing about it to note- the pans and paints stay in place when the lid is closed, but they jangle around inside. I love to see, and support others opening up to, and embracing their creative process with any medium or creative expression. I keep the Cotman set at work in case I need to bust out a small lunchtime painting of Kauai in my planner. These portable watercolor sets are perfect to bring along whether you’re going to the countryside, relaxing at the beach, or walking urban landscapes. Anything that removes some barriers gets bumped up in the queue, and since I've purchased this kit I've found myself watercoloring more often, and enjoying it more than before.

From what I’ve read online as well as some of my personal experience, Koi watercolors seem to be geared more towards the amateur to mid-level watercolor artist. The Koi Watercolor Sketchbox (the 48-count) has been really nice to use as a beginner, and I can’t wait to share with you guys all the things I create with these paints. In addition to the brush, there’s also a small yellow sponge for cleaning the brush on the go, which is a nice touch.
