About this deal

I’m so torn because I love Greek mythology but I feel like this book just might be a bit too young for me, and this is coming from someone who loved The Percy Jackson series! This book captivated my interest from start to finish and I loved that it was a smooth ending with a little life lesson. I'm a triple-award-winning content creator with passion for entertaining people and sharing my stories.

Characters: all clichés (right down to the misunderstood environmentalist, obsessively tree-hugging best friend named Granola by her hippie parents), never really developed (the mother goes on random bouts of psycho-babble, but frankly, given her lack of consideration to her daughter’s needs, namely not moving in with some random dude! These tales of errant gods, fantastic creatures, and human heroes are brought to life in fresh and modern versions. Nate - A chaos magician who is shown to be more level-headed than many of the other recurring characters. I think it seemed a little rushed and unplanned to me, for example, near the beginning Phoebe's mum tells her that shes marrying this guy that she's known for six days and moving to Greece.I am so grateful that you came because the interest in reading in some of the students has gone high. Reading Sheppard’s use of Helen alongside Gorgias’ Encomium or Euripides’ Trojan Women, for instance, would generate really interesting discussion. Between keeping her family’s true identities secret, trying to impress her new friends, and meeting an actually cute boy, Helen’s stress levels are higher than Mount Olympus. Helen Thomas has just moved in with her dad’s family – who happen to be the ancient Greek gods, living incognito in London! Having taught inner-city teenagers for the best part of ten years, I can say that Sheppard has done a fine job of evoking their world.

Childs has certainly jumped on the Percy Jackson bandwagon here but it doesn't hold a candle next to other authors on the wagon such as Meg Cabot and Josephine Angelini. Helen Thomas, half-Greek God, goes to live with her dad (Zeus, duh) and has to start a new school whilst dealing with her immortal family (which includes her half-sisters, Athena and Aphrodite), losing her snog virginity and readjusting to London life. This, along with some of the other young adult romance novels, could be used in a genre or theme study in the context of book club. So when her Mom comes back from a trip and announces she's getting married to a complete stranger, Phoebe's life spins out of her control. For thousands of years they have inspired plays, operas, and paintings; today they live on in movies and video games. It's hard not to feel inferior when your older sister is Aphrodite, queen of beauty and massive star of social media.

By addressing these issues, Sheppard allows the reader to gain a rare insight on what life may be like for a young Black British girl growing up. The plot centres around the gods’ struggle to remain concealed in plain sight among unknowing mortals.Sifat Phoebe yang pantang menyerah dalam segala hal dan keberaniannya dalam menghadapi orang-orang yang memusuhinya patut diacungi jempol. It sounded like a light ya read with Greek mythology (which I love) what I ended up with was a mediocre teenage angst book. Fundie - He is a stereotypical fundamentalist, Christian who tries to convert/save the souls of the pagan characters. She knows making the track team is the first step in getting off the island, even if she does have to compete with the descendants of Ares (the God of war) to do it. Once Phoebe arrives in Athens she is informed that the school she will be attending is a school for the descendants of the Greek Gods but they are allowing her to attend the school even though she is a mere mortal.

I think it was the naked statue in full light, combined with the pink, combined with the title that made me feel slightly ridiculous to be reading this book. Helen is a complex, spirited teenager who, having come to terms with the death of her mother, has to face relocation to a new city. Unlike the Percy Jackson series which has a lot of fight scenes, this book is more like a comedic high school drama (think "Mean Girls" meets Greek mythology).Cute, about a teen girl who winds up on a Greek island where everyone else is the descendant of a Greek god.
