This book was incredibly useful in helping me understand that spiritual discipline is essential to godliness and that discipline is essential to accomplish anything in this life. It was the breaking of the tenth commandment (coveting his neighbor's wife) that led him to commit adultery, thus breaking the seventh commandment. The book is then packed with another 50 pages or so of 'resources' including the hilariously dated 'Bible on Audiocassette', which, honestly, I'm surprised made it into the updated version (the word is so old that my spell-checker is telling me I have it spelled incorrectly). Went through this book and a few other books with some guys at our church over the last 6 months and this was definitely a favorite in the group. Read this through my men’s Bible study and although, I would have probably not chosen this book to read by myself Im glad I read it.

The man who carries on an act of impurity is not simply breaking a human code, nor even sinning against the God who at some time in the past gave him the gift of the Spirit. In his book, Kent Hughes seeks to address this problem at its starting point, the area of spiritual discipline for the average Christian man. These works, both classic and contemporary are a great resource that I will draw from in the future. As the title implies, this is a book about disciplines for men who are trying to live a 'Godly' life.

The bare-knuckle command is "Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. It's an active reading, Bible rooted, a thought-provoking style that prompts you to engage and answer the questions posed in the chapters.

He constantly references scripture throughout the book, to provide examples of men in the Bible living out the disciplines. Every Christian man, whether a new believer or a mature Christian, will be challenged again and again by this remarkably wise and fascinating book. It not only teaches how to live a life of Christian discipline, but also instills the desire to do so into a young heart longing to live a life of integrity, meaning, and fulfillment. I am therefore so grateful to God for this great aid to the overriding aim of all of our lives: Christlikeness - read it and repent. My most recent reading of this book was in the last two years as I slowly went over it with some of the high school young men in my church.

There are some books, though very few, that remain ‘evergreen’—that through the years remain as useful and challenging as the day they were written.For many people, the word discipline evokes a sense of resistance–but Kent Hughes points out that the heart of spiritual discipline is a relationship with God. great book for any and every Christian man wanting to serve His God-the practice of godliness-work and discipline-no easy way to success in anything and that holds good in the spiritual/moral realm. Disciplines of a Godly family is equally good - packed with great practical ideas for the family man. He is sinning against the God who is present at that moment, against One who continually gives the Spirit.

After all the lack of manhood is not a challenge to American society alone, but to the world as a whole.In the current age in which we find elusive distinguishing a mere male from an actual man, this book is not only a must-reading, but also what I deemed it a whole university course, so to speak. Finally, there is a short epilogue with a concluding argument for the importance of Godly discipline and the correct response to grace God has given us. Each chapter looks at the discipline being discussed by follow by a section titled “Food for Thought” that has great discussion questions and there’s also an application/response section following that.
