Due to age and corrosion, the exhaust and cat flanges can corrode and become an MOT failure due to leaks. A common fault on E46 M3 models is failure of the exhaust flanges caused by rust / corrosion of this part.

I cut the studs off flush with the flange, used a dremel to cut of the "head" of the stud and the apparent weld bead, and then proceeded to burn up several decent drill bits over a couple of hours of tedious drilling.As above, I cut the remaining 2 studs off, drilled with several carbide bits, and used M8 bolts to replace them.
