This is a timeless guide that has proven immensely popular in its previous two incarnations and we expect this to continue when the third edition is released at the end of the summer (currently expected 1 September). The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. I’ve written to them to ask how the comparisons are supposed to work now, but nothing useful came back. The section with vagrants has been expanded to accommodate more images and longer texts for several species.

In addition it is less expensive and much more portable than these other titles, being lighter and more pocket-sized.

However, I do wish the naming of birds did not require me (a bit dyslexic) to get the spelling 100% right. This unique book treats more than 300 species - all the regularly occurring birds likely to be encountered by observers - and the guide's attractive pages provide a real-life approach to bird identification.

The darker shading shows where a species is most abundant, and the lighter shades where it is less so. They capture the excitement of the birds - the thing that anyone watching them closely would find most compelling: a black-tailed Godwit performing its balletic display, two Golden Eagles fighting in mid-air. You will not find a more compact and comprehensive guide to the birds that live in or reguarly visit Britain and the rest of Europe. Illustrations are the best in the business and juxtaposition of other, tricky comparison species really helpful. For each species the main text contains descriptions of plumage and structural features that are useful for identification, plus further information about habits and behaviour.
