About this deal

These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. Contains 100 printed pages of text featuring all 24 of Ravilious's illustrations in exquisite colour and includes an essay by Gill Saunders, Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

How, we might wonder, was Ravilious inspired by the village itself, with its idiosyncratic mix of medieval, early modern and Victorian architecture, and its fanciful plasterwork? If you have any question about this product or need to brainstorm how to compliment it with another feel free to reach out to us in the way that suits you most. His instantly recognisable style, palette and choice of subject have an almost universal appeal, a blend which has increased in popularity with the passing of time, particularly in the first two decades of the 21st century.

Numerous illustrations, mostly in colour, including all the plates from the original edition of the legendary High Street.

With the addition of text from Ravilious's friend, Jim Richards, what was produced was one of the most famous and iconic illustrated books of the twentieth century. From about 1934 some publishers in the UK had experimented with the material as dust jackets over decorated boards. Founded by Simon and Angie Lewin in 2005, our online gallery presents a selection of limited edition original prints – available for purchase. Only 2,000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz during World War II. A very enjoyable book - beautifully produced and a fascinating snapshot of the high street as it was around the middle part of the Twentieth Century.First edition, sole impression; 8vo; 24 colour lithograph plates and plain wood-engraved title vignette by Eric Ravilious; publisher's pictorial boards, with the 'transmatic' dust jacket and printed card flaps, a superb copy in the rare cellophane dust-jacket with printed paper flaps, cellophane shrunk as usual with front flap separated, nevertheless a stunning copy of a vulnerable book. Sir James Maude Richards (1907–1992) was editor of Architectural Review from 1937 to 1971 and architectural correspondent of The Times for more than twenty years.

Its design is less elegant than other inter-war trade books, including Adrian Bell’s Men and the Fields, illustrated with six full-page lithographs by John Nash, which Pat Gilmour described in 1977 as ‘one of those nine shillings and sixpence bargains that still make one gasp’. Written in large part for middle school children, High Street is a survey of the businesses to be found along a typical high street in the 1930s. I won't say it was worth the wait, as somebody should have resurrected this lost classic decades ago, but as soon as I got my copy it was clear that we'd been missing something special for a very long time. Happily Russell also discovered that two of the businesses are still trading from their original premises.
