About this deal

Rose is believed to have killed Charmaine shortly before Fred's prison release date of 24 June 1971.

His writing style is engaging and conversational but also communicates facts well presented with a tabloid slant that makes it entertaining as well as informative. Several months later, Rose introduced Fred to her family, who were aghast at their daughter's choice of partner. In addition to her prostitution, Rose engaged in casual sex with both male and female lodgers within their household, and individuals Fred encountered via his work; she also bragged to several people that no man or woman could completely satisfy her. Fred later admitted to having engaged in numerous affairs in the early years of his marriage, and fathered one illegitimate child with a woman from the Gorbals.

It is rare to have a husband and wife serial killer team, operating for years altogether without anyone even noticing. Throughout his life he remained barely literate, yet displayed an aptitude for woodwork and artwork. By 1957, Fred and his brother John frequently socialised at a youth club in nearby Ledbury, where his distinct and guttural Herefordshire accent marked him as a " country bumpkin". shudders}}} Can you imagine finding (and keeping) your soul mate when your obsession is violent, murderous sex?

Their relationship initially improved, but Rena left the following year, again leaving the children in his care. Howard Sounes is a journalist, he covered the story when it broke and the trial of Rosemary West, much of the information in this book is from that.In fact it took until the later half of 1992 before a significant inquiry arrived at the door of 25 Cromwell Street, by which time the body count was already in double figures and many others had been horrendously damaged by the chronic abuse they had endured. Unlike many other books, Howard Sounes begins to address some of the tenants hearing screaming, though it was clearly very easily brushed off. For example, did I need to know that the cop in charge - Hazel - wore tortoiseshell glasses and had short brown hair?

It is not reading for the faint of heart; but for readers like myself, who are impelled to read true crime and crime fiction to learn “Why?I’m not going to pretend this is an easy read but I’m glad to say it doesn’t dwell on accounts of the murders themselves, although of course they do feature, rather this is Mae’s account of things she remembers from childhood; Heather and her younger brother Stephen feature largely here because of the first three children of Rose and Fred West were close in age.

The room included a private bar, and a red light outside the door warned when Rose was not to be disturbed. But of course one of the more unique and sinister aspects to this story is the vital role played by Rose West, unlike in most other similar scenarios, she was no innocent victim swept up in the madness and chaos, but instead she was actually a motivating force behind much if not most of it, a domineering figure with terrifying and violent mood swings which inevitably led to the death of various young women and children. I read mainly Mysteries and Thrillers, with over half of my reads being Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) directly from the publisher/author. So I found it apropos that this superb recounting of the killer couple, Fred West and Rose Leets West, their crimes and personalities, history and ancestry, be published this week (March 14, 2017 release). The author, Howard Sounes, was employed at the time of the discovery of the buried bodies at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucestershire, UK, as a staff reporter for the ‘Sunday Mirror’ newspaper in London.I only recommend this to those with an interest in real life crime sprees and with an iron clad stomach.
