Glencadam, another little-known distillery, which is among Scotland’s oldest working distilleries, took three Gold Outstanding medals for its The Rather Dignified 15 YO, Reserva Andalusia Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish and American Oak Reserve Small Batch Malt Scotch Whisky. The latter is not yet available in the US market but is coming soon. The Isle of Skye 12 blows the doors off Legacy. Hands down. I'm going to save the rest of my Skye and use up this bottle of Legacy for the same purpose. It will be gone in about three or four more months of after dinner drinks with "whisky heathen" friends who can't learn the fine art of sipping a scotch and appreciating it. C'est la vie. I have also tasted a number of dreadful independent bottlings, often overlong in finishing casks, where the Tomatin spirit has been bludgeoned to death. However, indie bottlings in bourbon are often great; their only challenge is meeting the price point delivered by the brand. Tomatin can be good at 40% ABV, better at 43%, and absolutely sings at 46%; I don’t believe it needs a cask strength presentation. All of this plays into Tomatin being one of the few distilleries where the official bottlings are my preference over independent releases. The Legacy (or Dualchas in the USA) is a non-age statement that is one of few expressions Tomatin produce that is Chill-filtered with added colouring. This release is 80% 7 -8 year old first-fill bourbon with the other 20% being around 4 year old in Virgin oak.If you buy a bottle of the Legacy, do yourself a favor and drink it on ice. I'm sure it's quite pleasant with ice and soda. The IWSC judges, for their part, had this to say: “Seductively round, with delicious aromas of rich linseed and sweet honey, and ripe tropical fruit notes on the palate. Guava, papaya and mango all make an appearance, interspersed with star anise and fine oak tones which linger on the finish.”
Tomatin has been officially producing Whisky since 1897 however off the books it may have been operating since the 1700s! The nose is brilliant but there is not much development in the mouth. I’d guess this is a mix of sherry and bourbon casks, similar to the current 12 year old, but here the whisky is soft and has very well integrated flavours which delivers a little more sophistication than the current bottle. Among the lesser-known Gold Outstanding medalists was Balblair, which was a triple winner for its 12 YO, 18 YO and 25 YO. This is another up and coming distillery whose portfolio of single malt whiskies is outstanding and hugely underappreciated. It’s sister distillery, Pulteney, also won for its 18 YO expression. The Balblair 25 YO, an exceptional whisky was described in the official tasting note as: Nose: Needs time in glass. Curdled butter, rancid coconut, stale butterscotch, sour barley, maple syrup on fresh granola.

It's owned by the Takara Shuzo company. Around eighty percent of Tomatin's whisky goes into blended whisky, including its own brands of Antiquary and Talisman.
Kilchoman was the only other Islay distillery to take a Gold Outstanding medal. It won for its Machir Bay Scotch Whisky. The whisky is matured in both ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks. Great Drams, a specialty bottler, took a Gold Outstanding medal for its Islay Distillery Single Cask Single Malt Whisky. In the mouth: Malty, oaky, very bourbon forward, actually my maximum amount of bourbon cask, then sherry sweetness arrives, bringing butter popcorn, fudgy traybake, charred sugar, toasted marshmallows, darker fruits like raisings and then baking spices and feeling a little raw. Conclusions: Tomatin distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the village of Tomatin. Its whisky is classified as being from the Highland region, as it is 25 minutes south of Inverness.Other standout winners included Ballantine’s Glenburgie 12 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Most of Glenburgie’s whisky output is slated for Ballantine’s Blended Scotch Whisky, one of the top 5 blended whiskies in the world by volume. The distillery, significantly underappreciated, has also been releasing single malt whisky expressions. At this price range they are beaten on both price and taste by the Aldi and Lidl Speysides.
In general, the whisky drinker derides these types of expressions as “supermarket whisky.” There’s the undisclosed age of the whisky (usually between five and eight years old). They’re normally presented at the lowest ABV of 40%, or sometimes a marginally more generous 43%. These are priced to compete with blends, driven by the desire for cash and not a love of whisky. In total: it’s thought that they’re to be avoided.Among Islay distillers, Laphroiag was the big winner, taking two Gold Outstanding medals for its 10 YO Sherry Oak Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky and its Select Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Islay whiskies marry particularly well with sweet wine casks, producing expressions that are smoky and with distinct fruity and sweet notes.
